Campland by the bay is not a place we go. We went once and too noisy, too many kids, and the spaces if I recall are on asphalt. However, I have friends that love the place. Lots of activites for the kids and they usually have bands that play on the grass area on the weekends. It's also close to the main beaches (they also have a beach) and you can watch sea world fireworks everynight. Again kids love the place. We usually go to Chula Vista RV park and like the peace and quiet. Chula Vista is a good park extremely clean, and two bars and restaurants within 200 yards walking distance. Overall--adults will like Chula Vista and Kids will like Campland.

We have not gone yet. We have reservations for the weekend of the 18th of July for a few nights. I hear what you are saying about the place, but I finally decided that we would have fun no matter where we go. I have four kids, I'm betting that they will enjoy it as well. Our spot is actually right by the grassy area with the live band, which we are all looking forward too. Besides, anyplace where it is not 115 degrees in the shade is my kind of place
I camped there as a young adult with family. We spent most days sailing on the catamarans that people brought and kept right on the beach. Loved it then.
Went back last year in September. Yes, it can be really crowded. Seems to be lots of BIG rigs, we camp in a pop-up. We were in the section where many "long term" people stay. It wasn't the greatest trip, but being right next to the beach is a plus. So is the pool for the kids. And, you are close to lots of things to do in San Diego. There is a small video arcade, a store for the kids to buy ice dream, and a small cafe. You can also rent sail boats right there.
I'm sure you will have a great time.

Yeah...thanks to all for your input. The kids are gonna have fun, I'm convinced of it. I, on the other hand, might be a little stressed, but we are gonna give it the ol' college try. We will be there next week so I will report back if something gets ripped off. I will also post on rvparkreviews.com It's a good site for this type of info and I urge you all to post there also.

Let me point out once again, yes it is a more urban cg if you will. They try to keep folks out who do not belong. But it's the beach. The beach has always had more than its share of riff-raff. I grew up on these beaches spent my summers on these beaches and there were perverts way back then too. No change. You watch your kids, you watch your stuff. Heck a kid got murdered up in a beach bathroom in Oceanside years ago and you don't hear people bashing that place like this. It's the beach it's summer, it's crowded and it's anything but peaceful, save 5am sunrise.
One more thing I'll point out again. We went to Carlsbad State Beach over Easter break and if it wasn't freakin bolted down, it got stolen. We had friends chain and bolt a gen outside their rig to the undercarriage, it got ripped overnight. There was some pervert trying to get cancelation campsites each night who drove around, not in an rv of any sort, but a work van....not one piece of camping gear. He was either scoping out kids or women...but he was up to no good. So where's all the BS about Carlsbad?
I have not been to Campland in 25 years. (except to drive thru a few times)So I have no particular angle here other than to put some of you parents at ease enough to enjoy your vacation. Would I go there and let my kids run wild, no. But I would not do that anywhere. Would you? If the answer is of course not, you'll be fine. You'll be crammed in, you'll likely have or hear noisey beach goers, you'll have to lock your bikes up and keep really valuable stuff out of site. But your kids are going to have a blast and you'll all say you went camping at the beach this summer.

Pretty good advice Mike, but I think you have to experience Campland now to really appreciate good locks and watching your kids. And no amount of caution is too much when it comes to the kiddos.
After reading several reviews, mostly here and on rvparkreviews.com, we were a bit worried to say the least. However, I have to admit, it was a nice stay. I do not think this would be the place to take the wife on a romantic getaway, but for taking the kids, it was nice. Our four little ones (ages 13 down to 4) had a blast! We rented a pedel boat for a couple hours and they enjoyed roaming the bay. SeaDoo's, ski boats, sail boats, catamarans, and other water toys all available for $$$. Seaworld fireworks over the bay at night...really cool. Bathrooms and showers clean and, oddly enough, the entire park was really quiet after 10pm. A tab bit crowded; had neighbors to both sides and to the rear even though there were other spots that were empty. It would have been nice if the park staggered the occupants a bit more. Also pricey, but where else can you take the family to the beach and spend the night...with all the hook-up's for that? Staff and other campers friendly. Fire pits and bench at every site. The cable TV was outstanding and kids had all the channels they watch at home. Didn't need to set up the DISH and that was an advantage. We would stay there again, and yeah...I did watch the kids like a Hawk, but overall, the groups of people we encountered were all good. I can see how some less-than-desirable folks might thrive there, but mostly everyone that was there (around us anyway) had kids too.

Well, we just returned from our visit at Campland. Overall, it was a pretty good experience. We were lucky and were in section J backing to the large grassy area where the live band played, so we had more room than most. My kids had a blast, nothing got stolen and we were camped next to some really fun, nice people. Although, I can see why people said the negative things that they did, I also think that the bulk of the people there are families on vacation. I would probably stay there again if I was in the area.
