Any others
Looking at a small class C or (B+) with a middle sleeping area (Overstuffed couch becomes queen size bed). It's just my wife and I and we are past the age of crawling up in an over the cab bunk. Also the little closet sized back side rooms with the little foam pad doesn't appeal either.
I realize I could go to a larger coach 26-32' with a full back bedroom but the idea is to stay under 50K out the door. With gas getting to be what it is I don't want an old used coach either.
Any suggestions-moving from a Laredo 28rl fifth wheel so I don't know Class c's very well.
Any 23 foot Class C should fit the bill. All have the overhead bed but a fold-out couch is always included on the main floor.
Also most 21- and 23-foot B+ units have the couch/bed as well as a dinette. The 23-foot Phoenix model 2350 has a very large couch in a slide-out but it is over your budget when new and may be hard to find used.
I just acquired a 2000 Starflyte for about half your budgeted amount. It has a rear bed area. The bath a wet bath so that limits its usefulness somewhat. But it is compact to drive around.
I'm moving from a 28' Cougar and can tell you what we went through. My final short list was a Sprinter-based class C (24' to 25'), and a 29' Class A. We looked at motorhomes for years, and rented a 31' class C on a Ford chassis. We looked inside probably 50+ Ford and Chevy/Workhorse class C units and I wouldn't have taken any of them over the short class A. For the same length, the class A has more space, is more comfortable, doesn't cost any more, and doesn't use more fuel. If you need the extra sleeping space provided by the overhead bunk, then the class C wins. I was totally impressed by the comfort and handling of the Sprinter units. For me, the cockpit comfort and ease of handling is far and away the best of all of them. They get better mileage but cost a lot more up front. You have to choose between a small permanent bed, or no permanent bed and more living space. Lots of tradeoffs to make. We went with a Sprinter without a permanent bed. There's sleeping space in the overhead area, dinette, and jacknife couch. Each of those is plenty large for one person. I'm hoping to fit both of us on the couch after augmenting its length a few inches, but if that doesn't work out we have to sleep separately. I'll know for sure in a couple of years if this was the best choice. It was a very difficult decision, and it costs over 80k.
