We're looking at driving down the California coast from Leggett, CA to San Francisco, and I was curious what I could expect in terms of road conditions and pulling a 25 foot TT.
Thanks in advance!

You can expect a very curvy route. Personally, I would not tow my rig down Hwy 1 from Legget to SF, just too nerve racking. I am not a squemish driver either, tow in the mountains all the time. I am not saying it cannot be done, several do.

WOW they must have re-routed 101 since about 6 years ago when we traveled that way because it was close to a super highway at that time. Some curves in the extreme Northern part of the state around the Red Wood country but most other areas it was pretty tame.

SkipandChar-they are referring to route 1 not 101. 1 IS VERY curvy with steep (short) hills, up and down, between the curves. First (only) time we were hauling our 25 ft fiver (long time ago) I tore a wheel well "fgender' off the fiver on a guard rail! Foggy and rainy that day - but even so it sure was/is pretty!
If you doit - pay atterntion to the speed signs - and snouth bound the driver will (should) not see much of the scenery and hope the passenger has strong knuckles. But - go for the gusto friends.

LeBout, in your title you say highway 101, and then you add "driving down the california coast". Highway 101 does not go down the coast, it is highway 1 that goes down the coast. You might want to clear this up so you can get better answers. Highway 101 or Highway 1 ??? I think you mean Highway 1 which does indeed start at Legget and goes through Fort Bragg and on down the coast to Bodego bay and then on to SF. Pretty curvy and narrow and going south, the passenger will be hanging real close to the ocean cliffs. Can it be done? Yes. Will you enjoy it? depends on your tolerance for these kinds of roads, you just need to be aware in the turns so you don't meet a logger truck, which you can do by rolling your window down and listening for them.
Leggit to Fort Bragg, curvy and narrow, Ft Bragg to past Mendocino, nice and wide. From there on, curvy and narrow clear to Jenner. Jenner to Bodega bay, pretty good. From then on, a toss up. Tough for me to recommend one way or the other because I don't know your tolerance level.

If you want to see a grown man cry, look one that drove Hwy 1 from Legget to Ft. Bragg. Drove it in a 33' A with a toad. Very curvy, lots of 10 mph curves. Once you start you are committed. As I recall it took 1hr. 45 min. to go 26 miles. You may want to consider going down to Willits and across 20. About 34 miles and a one hour trip. Not too bad.

The OP said the Coast which is Hwy 1, not 101.
101 is still far from a super highway, but a great route and very doable in any RV set-up. Also, Redwood is one word not two.

Thanks for the replies. I actually DID mean 101 and considered that the "coast" from the standpoint of being close enough. I think we'll steer clear of HW1 and go on 101.
Thanks again!

LeBout, PCH above San Francisco is very curvy and many of those curves are tight. We did drove PCH north bound 3 years ago, well the driver has no time for sight seeing.
North bound PCH above San Francisco

If I recall correctly this first few miles of PCH(above SAn Francisco) has a vehicle size advisory limited to 25 feet.If you decide to use PCH drive carefully.
Straight down the 101 would be you best bet.

I've driven both...Hwy 101 towing and Hwy 1 in a rented Porsche Boxster. Guess which one was more fun!
