There are three choices:
1. take the long trip as planned
2. take a shorter trip
3. stay home
We choose option 1 because at 70 years old can we `afford' to wait? And wait for what; $3.00 gas instead of $4.00 gas?

We just got a new rig that gets better mileage, but with more expensive fuel. We'll deal with it and continue to take the trips we'd planned on.

Dick B makes a good point - who knows how much longer we'll be able to do it?

Not counting food as we have to eat any way.WE are leaving Friday for a ten day trip staying at FED and State camp grounds. With a gray hair pass 12.83 a night average and 512.00 in gas for 1700 miles at 12.0 MPG and 3.62 a gallon so about $63.28 a day.I don`t count food as we eat out a good bit when at home also.Plus leaving the A/C TV. Computer and lights off at home off saves about five dollars a day so camping is still a cheap change from the real world.

Scbwr. your saving more than you think. You will never find a motel room near any thing in the Smokies for $65.00. More like $120.00 per night. Even in the bargain motels. Even camping cabins are more than $65.00.
There is no doubt in my mind, that a camping vacation is much less than a motel/ condo vacation of the same length.
For example. Our 8 day beach vacation will cost us less than $700.00. And that includes gas, and site cost. I checked an oceanfront room for the same length of stay, and number of people. It came out to between $2000.00 to $2500.00. And that doesnt include gas. So I do believe I comming out to the good. To the tune of from $1300 to $1800.00. And that makes my TT payment for over a year. not to take into consideration. It isn't the only trip we take that saves $80.00 to $100.00 per night.

I do not see anyone HERE who is in a PANIC mode. Look, it's obvious that the high-cost impact has been felt, and many of us are in the talking stage,....thinking outloud,....what are we going to do. It's obvious to many of us that we're going to have to do something. I know what I'm going to do.

I don't remember who it was, but I remember on post where the person had just sold his RV and was looking to sell their truck. May not be panicking but is is close.

DW and I were camping last weekend at Veterans Memorial State Park and are returning their the weekend after the next. The park was full last weekend and if the reservation system is correct will be full on our next trip. While talking with the CG host it seems that people are still going, but are staying closer to home.

I'm not surprised...I was being very conservative when I was making my point. And, I agree that camping can still be economical.

To many others that responded........I wasn't thinking that a lot of folks are in "panic" mode, but I know there has to be a lot of concern about gas prices and whether an rv is a good investment. So, I was hoping that I could just encourage folks to crunch some numbers and see that they can continue to enjoy camping/traveling even if it requires a few modifications to plans or budget. And, as this price surge continues, this may not be the best time to try to trade in a rig or sell.

Who cares if anyone can go camping, all these fuel threads are self serving and pompous. The Country is headed towards big problems, people are losing their jobs, can't feed their family's, fuel prices are putting truckers out of work, the cost food and clothing is going thru the roof. All types of people and business's are effected. Even our beloved RV industry is taking big hits with the closing of 3 major brand. Wake up people...

I got it. It's all a matter of semantics, one person calls it "panic", and I call it a necessary change of strategy. Not that I'm putting my motorhome on the market, BUT I can see that without it, my life will go on. There's other hobbies in which we can participate which are more affordable.
