I understand how you feel and I sympathize. I hope you get it worked out.

I also want to thank you for posting this. I am thinking this could happen to any of us. I believe that I will also begin to take "departure" photos when we leave public campsites. With the time and date in a digital photo that could really help.

Hang in there!

(I guess they thought you had some "splainin'"to do, Lucy!)

I would have to agree that someone else dumped theirs off at your site. In our little town it is not uncommon to have outsiders drop off their trash at the curb on trash days.

I love your pictures also! Sounds like you have a lot of character witnesses! Shall we all call the COE tomorrow on your behalf??? (I'm not kidding!) Just give us a number and a name!

It would be getting pretty sad if you have to try and prove that you left a campsite properly!

Lucy, I was a park ranger and park manager for the COE for 15 years and the written warning is nothing to worry about. It's kept on file in the local office where it originated and will not be reported to higher authority. However, in this computer age your written warning will be in their system and should you violate regulations (another minor offense) at the same area at a future date, they will see that you are a repeat offender and may choose to issue a citation requiring the payment of a fine for this new offense. If you contact the Park Manager, I'm sure he/she will remove the warning from their computer system, if you explain as you have here. Good luck.

Thanks for the support folks.

Dinosaurman -- I really appreciate the background on what this means and how the process works. That is helpful to me and probably others who might find themselves in a similar situation someday. I'll be very respectful in my discussion with the rangers/mgrs. I fully understand they just found garbage and have to assume the previous campers left it. All I can do is explain what we did and our surprise of their findings. Of course I will ask them to remove it from our file. Hopefully they will oblige.

Shesalday - no need to call on our behalf. I appreciate the offer though.

I surely hope it was just an accident .. if it was intentional by a fellow camper well that just breaks my heart. I have no clue and of course we will never know so moving forward I'll probably take pictures of our campsites when we vacate with the timestamp feature. At least for awhile til the worry subsides.

Amen! We've gone to some neat places (e.g., Kerr Lake COE) because of Lucy's posts and pix. We check her site as much as we do rvparkreviews.com. These are not littering folks. Steve

As a retired COE executive, I'm so sorry this happened to you, but elated that COE rangers are enforcing campground regulations. COE rangers, as a whole are extraordinary nice, low key folks, and sometimes they let too much slide by. You shouldn't worry too much about this, but I would certainly call the Chief Ranger and/or Project Office and speak to one of the higher ups, explaining your situation, and thanking them for doing their job.

We have a small county park near us. Many of the residents complained to the county about the lack of trash cans and the trash that was left in piles. This included rotting fish. The county responded and put in many more trash cans and they have kept the park very clean. Since then I have watched numerous times as local residents put trash in the park trash cans. They do not want to pay $40/mo for pick up and they are too lazy to take it to the free "convenience center". I am always amazed at the lack of scruples in some people. Sounds like you are a victim of the same laziness.

I would be devastated! No matter if it is just a warning letter, you should write a letter and give them the link to your website so they know what "type of camper you really are".
