I posted a couple of times re getting out of my 2006 Laredo and 2007 Silverado 2500 HD and into a small class C and a little Toyota Yaris or Honda Fit to commute with and pull when taking the coach out. See my posts.
In shopping for the best deal several dealers want an earnest deposit $500-1000 quote- "To get the very best pricing for you I do need an earnest deposit, refundable if we can not attain the right payment for you. A credit card deposit of $1000 will hold the coach while we determine financing options". My question: Is this how coach dealers work? If so how do I compare deals from competing dealers ? Do I give 4 or 5 dealers a Grand a piece?
I'm not asking them to go out and buy the coach for me and hold it on their lot or drive it to my house so I can look at it. I not asking them to burn a drop of gas just take the salesman's time to check my credit , my trade and their pricing.
So you veterans please tell me how this works.

In the old days some auto dealers would try to pull that trick which puts a lot of pressure on the buyer to go somewhere else because he/she already has started the payment process.
I'd ignore the earnest deposit; what does the dealer give you in return if you pay it?

This is a buyer's market. Find another dealer. Believe it or not, there are good dealers out there...

And who determines if they were able to "attain the right payment"?

This is just a ploy to get you obligated to the dealer you are shopping. Don't buy into it, you should control the whole process. Just tell the salesperson, that if the coach sells before we make a deal, then oh well. Also tell the salesperson that you are shopping other dealers, and the pressure is on them to come up with the best price. Also, do not shop payments. Get the bottom line price, do not mix financing with pricing. Get financing yourself from your bank or credit union and if the dealer can procure financing cheaper then go for it. BUT DO NOT TELL THE DEALER YOU ARE GETTING YOUR OWN FINANCING. They make a lot of profit from their financing so tell them you are going to let them finance the deal, but to keep it simple, you just want prices, not payments.

Tell the dealer to give you a customer deposit, that's a deposit to ALLOW him to continue talking to you.
No really after you stopped laughing what did you say. Also did the sales guy have white shoes, and a 3" wide whit belt, with a wrinkled shirt, greasy slicked back hair?

As safeman says, this is a buyer's market. Good grief, they should be happy right now to have someon interested in buying a new RV! There are plenty of deals where that one came from.

For people buying a Toyota Yaris or a Honda Fit...the dealers can't keep enough of these things in stock because of the hype going on. It isn't a "buyers market" for these! Plan on paying up.

Plan on paying up. Sorry--I thought he was trying to buy a new Class C. Didn't read the post carefully, I guess...
