Jake is coming along nicely in the 3 weeks we have had him. Last week he became ours officially - hubby went to the shelter to pay for him. His obedience classes were canceled as we were the only ones signed up. The next class is not at a convenient time or day of the week for us, so hubby and I will be training him with the help of one or two of the dog training books. He is getting to understand that he is low man on the totem pole, even after the cats.
It has been determined that Jake is still in puppy mode. He chews on everything - no furniture than goodness. But he is learning. He now knows that "NO" is a command and not part of his name.
The other day hubby was cleaning our campground restrooms and tied him up outside. For lack of anything better to do, he "trimmed" the lower branches of our Rose of Sharon bush and started carrying around the limbs. It needed trimming anyway, but I really wish he had used the trimming shears instead of his teeth! It is a good thing he is gentle of nature; those jaws could be dangerous if he ever got in a bad mood.
Oh dear ... in our house EVERYONE is lower than the cat. And our poor dog Jake is the very bottom of the pecking order.
We're very fortunate that our cat is willing to share her house with us all. Although, if we weren't there she wouldn't be fed daily and there'd be no one to clean her litterbox and stock the fire for her. Guess we're just live in maids.
We have had Jake for one month. Boy, has he learned a lot. And so have we. To know him is to love him and the vet techs at the Vet clinic all love him: first it was for a bath and checkup; then it was for consistently loose stools (which we have finally got under control). They have all enjoyed his visits. He is starting to settle in and when he isn't chasing the cats - which we think he thinks are just moving stuffies, or chasing our older dog, he sleeps by my chair, no matter what chair I am in. He has also become a LAP puppy and jumps into my lap when I am in the big chair.
Thanks to all who have commented and given encouragement. He's a Keeper!!!
Our Jake ate every rose of sharon bush we had in our yard. How funny that yours appreciates the flavor as well. Maybe it's something with the name.
