Thanks for the replies. I was totally clueless about this subject, but it did make me think, you don't see many cats in movies doing tricks, so maybe that is the answer. Thanks again

I have my cats trained so that when I open a can of tuna cat food and set it on the floor, they come running.

Our 4 cats will come if we whistle and shake the treats jar. I have attempted to train them to stay off tables and countertops. I'm sure they do it behind our backs though, lol.

I've trained many cats over my lifetime. The key is consistency. If the cat is not to be allowed on the kitchen counter, for example, never, ever deviate from that rule. If the cat proves to be stubborn (we have a passive aggressive 13-year-old), a spray bottle of water liberally applied works wonders.
If you want a cat to learn tricks, that's harder. But basic standards of conduct and good manners are not difficult, if you're patient.

I'd bet that if you just shake the jar without the whistle they would also come.

Our cat would sit up for treats on command and come most of the time when called by his name, never for Kitty. When we said walk he went to sit on his leash knowing he had to have it on before we went outside.
When he wanted to he would play fetch with a small pom-pom. Not necessarily when we wanted to throw it for him.
