Hello everyone,
We're planning for our annual summer trip up to GHSP and I just saw the disclaimer on reserveramerica.com about the water situation. Does anyone have any information on it? It talks about options from turning off hot water in the bath houses to closing them altogether and trucking water in. I hope it doesn't come to that? I really enjoy the place but I don't think DW & DD would go for "dry" camping...

Just looked on the VA State Park website and no mention made of water problems. You can, I think, contact them directly through their website and ask. I'm sure there is water available. Just fill your freshwater tank and enjoy.

The statement has been posted for some time. Best bet is to call GH. I have camped there when there really was NO water (bathhouses & spickets OFF) We learned that they don't have a good system as this was long before the drought conditions. The statement is there so they don't have to worry about people asking for refunds if they should end up camping without water. Good luck!

I called Grayson Highlands directly to ask. The ranger who answered said that they hadn't even turned the water back on yet, and that the area is no longer in a drought situation. He said there should be no problem. That was a month ago though, so now I'm wondering why the warning is still up.

I called again this morning (5/5) and this time a different ranger told me that they ARE still having drought conditions. At the moment they have full water service and they are HOPING to be able to contiue that throughout the summer. She said they haven't gotten much rain so far this spring, but that May is usally a rainy month.

We were there this weekend. I talked to the head ranger and he made no mention of a water problem. Without rain, however, from mid-summer thru the fall could bring back water restrictions. I've backpacked in that area for many years and can tell you that many of the springs that flow during the winter and spring months disappear in the summer and fall.

I live 40 miles away and the drought is gone. We've had plenty of rain and we are having a lot of rain frequently.

So, the ranger who led our hike said that they are still recovering from last year's drought. We had full water service over Memorial Day. Later in the summer they could have a problem if it's dry like last year, but for now there are no water restrictions.
