Depends on age. Our 14 year old GSD now uses a PetStep ramp. They work great. If I pick up her ramp, even just to move it a bit in the garage, I find I suddenly have a very close friend, because we MUST be going SOMEWHERE.
As others said, if steps have holes in them, cover holes so no nails get caught.

We have a 13 year old and he needs a helping hand getting up. We have a ramp and it scares him. It would have to be 20 feet long to get an angle he would be comfortable with. Getting out is another problem. I put my hand against his chest and let him go down. He's comforted by my hand there, just in case he stumbles. We also have a 15 month old. He acts like his brother and pretends he needs help going up the stairs but I think he just wants the attention :-)
Some times he will forget and he'll bound up the steps in one hop.

Introducing Lucy's Legacy
We have a 14+ years border collie with arthritis that couldn't get into our FW. We bought a tri-fold ramp made by Jeep from Petco.
It works real good and folds up so it fits in the step well or behind the recliner by the door.
At first they were very leery as Greyhounds are. Thought they had to jump but after a couple of trips up and down they became old pros.
