What’s the whole theory behind (2) 6 volt batteries instead of (2) 12 volts ????

More amp hours are obtainable from the right pair of 6v batteries than normally available 12v that fit in battery boxes.

The typical Group 24 battery furnished on a camper has an 85 amp hour rating and a reserve capacity of 140 minutes. 170 amp hours and 280 minutes when doubled in parallel.

A pair of Trojan T125 deep cycles, with the same footprint and only an inch taller has 240 amp hours and 488 minutes reserve capacity.

Paralleling 12v batteries puts them in a constant discharge as the weaker will draw current from the stronger continually. A pair of 12v batteries, however, has the benefit of redundancy: if one fails or is damaged you still have the other.
