With regard to vegetables, I just meant to not leave them out as their odor attracts bears. As for cooking other meats, we just do it outdoors, esp. if we can do it over charcoal where the fats are burned off on the coals. We also use our RVQ and just clean it up very good before storing it again.
As for your dog, make sure his food is put away also and don't let him run off leash. If he attracts a bear, he'll run back to you, bringing the bear with him.
Really, bears tend not to be a problem for most people with a little bit of common sense. The closest encounter I've had with a bear was one breaking into our cabin because he smelled fresh peppers and tomatoes. There was a bear near our tent on the Chilkoot Trail in Alaska, but he never bothered us. Again, he was there because it was an established campsite and he came through every night to see what people had left out.
We used some "odor proof" bags when we were in WY a few years ago. They look like those "space bags," but are for eliminating odors.
Don't know if they actually work, but i do know we didn't have any problems with bears, even though there were sightings nearby while we were camping there.
We still put everything in the vehicle & never kept anything in the PUP, even in these bags. They helped give peace of mind to my DH & kids, who were very nervous about camping there in bear country.
Don't know how to make this a link... http://www.campmor.com/outdoor/gear/Product___75205 they come in 3 sizes
So, have camped/lived the wyoming/montana thing for a long while. We always put our food in the truck bed with top (where the dog sleeps) and it is locked.
Never had problems
Once in Idaho, black bears were stealing steaks right off the grill a foot away from the camper, they closed the campground to all "soft sided" tents and trailers, so we had to leave. But really, if there are any bear sightings at all, they post signs all over the place and if you check with the local authorities, they can tell you if there have been any near or not.
