Does anyone on this forum have geese for pets? If so, what do you do with them when you go camping?

I can't imagine camping with a goose - though it would probably make a good watchdog - er, bird. When I was a kid, some friends of ours, who lived on a farm, had a goose as a watch-bird, and it was pretty good, except that it felt especially attached to one of their cars. As a result, it would attack whichever family member got into the car to drive it somewhere.

I've never seen geese as pets while camping but last year the family next to us had a chicken in a cage. Their little boy was taking care of it - it could've been a 4-H project for all I know. They brought in at night though considering we were in wolf country.

When I was a kid next door neighbor kid had a big goose for a pet. Dont know aboutcamping with one, but they are better than a watchdog. And his would run all the dogs and cats out of the yard. A lady had a pet turkey followed her around. She said it kept her garden free of bugs and pests.

We have a pair of 5 year old Pilgrim Geese named Freddy and Libby that weigh about 35 lbs. each. They're our pets and we love them dearly...but they stay at home when we camp. They live in a fenced in area with the rest of our farm animals and have a dog house that they like to sleep in. I have never really thought of them as a camping pet. They make a lot of noise and they make a lot of p..p. When we go away a friend of my sons takes care of our brood. We do bring 2 dogs 1 cat and a pigeon however. When the dogs are with us the geese are the watchdogs..believe me they're up to the task.

Yep, had over twenty at one time (a few Canadians and African geese) and learned a lot. First, we fed them corn. They love it. Twice a day. Any farm supply store or TSC carries not only corn but other feed for them ranging from special mixes to crushed corn. As another poster said, keep them fenced in until they are older and then in the winter they must be protected against fox, and coyotes. We kept them in the barn in the winter and let them out only for a few hours in the winter time. If you have a pond (a must for them) they will stay near or in the water until the pond freezes which is when we closed them in. Snapping turtles love geese feet so rid the pond of them if you want to keep your geese.
Couple of obserations: First they can be very entertaining and even down right friendly. I had one that would get on the golf cart and ride with me for hours. When I would get off the cart he would follow like a dog then get back on to head home. They are very noisy and messy. If you have a dog or cat that may or may not be problem as my one dog loved to chase them. Hope that helps

We had geese when we had the farm. One hatchling was on my lap when he hatched and he bonded with me even tho I took him out to his Mom that night. For years I had to carry him if anyone other than family was around. He would attack....I belonged to him
I loved my geese and would love to have them again. However, I doubt my DH would appreciate one in the fiver

We have ducks (Runners and Campbells) but I wouldn't consider them pets. They have a pen and house where they spend nights and when we are away.
