We are seciously thinking of trading in our Class A and getting a 5th. wheel. We have looked at Alpenlite, Jayco & Montana's at about the 34' range. Now that Western has closed in Yakima what would be your chose the Jayco or Montana or would be still be safe w/Aplenlite?
We will be retiring next year and hope to make trips around the US.

We purchased a 327RLT Montana Mountaineer 35 ft. 5th wheel a year ago. So far we have been very happy with it. Love the extra room provided by the three slides. We also appreciate the kitchen layout in this model. See:

I bought a Heartland Bighorn last Dec. we spent 3 months in it in Arizona and love it. You might check out the Heartland web sight and visit the Heartland owners forum.

I recently read that Alpenlte maybe going under, you might want to chech it out.

Purchased our MONTANA 3400RL last year and love it. No problems whatsoever and it tows like a dream. We also looked very hard at BIGHORNS and they are impressive. Almost came down to a "coin toss" between the two. Dealer service made the difference with us. Best of luck.

We too are going to sell the class A and get a 5th wheel because of fuel prices. However the size of the fifth wheel will be in the 227 to 29 ft range with one slideout. We dont want anything so big it would require a 1 ton dually to pull. We are travelers more so than parking in one spot for long periods. If we stayed put more we would get something roomier. I think Jayco is a good compromise between the high quality, heavy weight rigs and the lightweights that may not hold up too well.

We have been looking at doing the same thing, except for we are looking at the Open Road 378 5th wheel. The Open Road looks like a high end unit for half the cost of some others. It sure looks like it is built strong.

After 30+ years of motorhoming, we went to a fifth wheel last fall. My last mh was a 34' Winnebago diesel pusher which we used for 8 years and really enjoyed it. I do my own maintenance on 3 vehicles, tractor, motorcycle, snowmobile. The maintenance on the diesel pusher mh was getting so expensive and hard to do, and a new diesel pusher would have cost me twice what I paid for my 99 model. I already had a 3/4 ton Chev Duramax crewcab pu, so thought a move to a similar size fifth wheel made a lot more sense.

We needed a lower profile to fit in our building with 12' high door and wanted something that would pull real well and was usable in National Parks and National Forest and other public campgrounds. We looked at lots of different models for a couple of years. We really liked the Alpenlites, but they raised the height in 2006, plus they seemed to be overprice (maybe reason they are now out of business).

We special ordered a 2008 Sundance 3200ES just the way we wanted it, then added things like solar panels, MorRyde pin box, slide awnings, inverter and extra batteries. The Sundance by Heartland seems to be very well built with lots of inovative new features and is a great value. I also added a 51 gal aux fuel tank in pu. We are very happy with our switch. This triple slide unit is very liveable, pulls real well, gets 11.5 mpg compared to 9.5 with our last DP...and cost 1/3 the price of a new DP mh!

We sold our Class A and ended up getting a Heartland Bighorn. We love it. Getting set to take a 6k mile trip in it next month.

We looked at tons of fifth wheels over 1 year, always kept coming back to the bighorn. This past weekend camping we were playing cards and had 6 adults, table and chairs in the living room and not crowded. Something we could have never done in our Class A.

We are on our second Jayco. They are well built units, reasonably priced, and have a good warranty.

Went from 20+ years in Class A's to a fifth wheel last October. Wouldn't trade back for anything now. We found a Heartland Bighorn 3370 we really love. Great company and the only thing we could find to compare to the fit and finish quality of our A. We now get twice the fuel mileage and have one less motor to maintain.
