We are looking for good ways to keep our large male Doberman close to camp without over constraining him.

Perhaps you will be more welcome to your CG neighbors if you think in terms of not "under constraining" a large male Doberman.

I never said we weren't welcome to our CG neighbors. We have never had a problem in that regard. We are just looking for some new ideas.

We use a 20ft. cable. It is stiff enough that the dog won't wind it too tightly around a tree or trailer tire. However, I'm not comfortable leasing my pup to it unless we stay with her but it allows her the freedom to explore a little.

That's what we do now and like you, we wouldn't leave him on it alone.

If you ever considered a screen room for your TT this would be a good time to revisit.
We got ours so our dogs could be outside whenever they wanted, we can leave the door to the TT open and they go in and out, they don't bother anyone that way, usually they both go out and just lay down and watch everyone.

a leash works well... at least for our great dane.
what exactly are you asking?
You could buy a portable dog run or something.
The best thing is training though. You CAN teach your dog not to leave your side.

one method worked for us for a while was a ground run.... I put two pins in the ground with a cable between them, then used a shorter leash than normal to it (cable) and the dog. it made a straight tangle free (in most cases) run that was easy to step over and almost trip-less.
