Due to a number of family issues, our travel is going to be very limited this year. Other than a few nearby state parks, we'll probably only make one "real" trip. Can anyone tell me if the MS Gulf Coast has recovered enough from Katrina to make that a good destination? We've never been there, but it also has the added advantage of being within an hour's drive for our toad of both New Orleans and Mobile.
I know I've heard that the casinos are back up and running, but while we would visit those we are not really into gambling. What about the beaches and other attractions? It's just the two of us, so we don't need any entertainment for kids.
Also, I've heard that the French Quarter in New Orleans is in full swing. Is this true? If we went to the MS Coast we'd plan a 1 or possibly 2 day trip there as well.
Thanks for any info you can share . . . Joyce

We were there last year and stayed at the Hollywood Casino (formerly Casino Magic). RV Park was in great shape, and would recommend you use this as your base. The bridge between Bay St. Louis and Gulfport was still under construction, however they had a ferry service (free). Still a lot of destruction visible, as well as rebuilding. The beaches were open but there was not much there in terms of businesses. You should go, it will be an interesting trip.
The devastation is still around, however, in my opinion the best place to stay is in Bay St Louis at the Hollywood Casino and Rv park. They completely had to rebuild everything. The RV park is one of the best with full hook-ups.This is a easy drive to New Orleans and Biloxi.
French Quarter is up and running, and is a wonderful place to visit. Take a horse carriage ride thru French Quarter. To be safe, however, you travel to the Quarter in the daytime. Since Katrina, crime in New Orleans has been on the uprise. Like in any big city, it has always had it's share of crime, but it has gotten a little worse since Katrina. Go in the daytime and watch your purse and wallet anad you will have a blast.
The beaches in Mississippi of course are there, but it is a little sad because of the destruction, but especially MS is coming back.

The drive along US 90 in Mississippi is interesting. The amount of destruction is unbelievable which you may not be able to judge having not seen the area before Katrina. The major destruction only extended about a mile inland but it wiped almost everything out along the coast.
The rebuilt casinos are very nice , there are some restaurants coming back , the beeches are cleaned up and one of the beach souvenir shops was opening when we were there in January. Inland everything is fine.
The sections are New Orleans that we visited were in very good condition. If you like museums these two are worth a visit. http://www.mardigrasworld.com/
The coast has a long way to go. The beaches are there and cleaned up, not as busy as they once were. Bay St Louis has returned pretty good along Hwy 90, but the rest of Hwy 90 going towards Biloxi is a little desolate. Most of that area was restaurants, hotels, and private residences. The casinos are really about all that has returned in full along Hwy 90. But that will soon change, both bridges connecting Hwy 90 are completely opened. We were in Biloxi the other day and they finally opened a McDonalds on Hwy 90. That and Waffle House were the only places to eat on Hwy 90 by the casions, other than the casinos.
New Orleans and The French Quarter is fully functional. If you are a history buff, make sure you visit the World War II Museum.
We just have returned from that area. As all have said it is coming along but still has much visible devastation which makes me sad. The French Quarter is rockin! Be sure to take the buggy ride and be aware of your surroundings and you will enjoy the trip.
I live near New Orleans. It is a great place to visit. The French Quarter is up and running. The bridge that connects Bay St. Louis to Gulf Port, MS is opening now. Come and have fun.
