It's always so sad to put a magnificent animal down. What big hearts these horses have.

There are thousands of horses put down from racing injuries, we only hear about the few that are in televised races, it's sad for all of them.

As long as they continue to race such young and immature horses, this kind of tragedy will continue to happen. In order to RACE a 3 year old, the training had to have started as a 2 year old.

Quote:

At the age of 1 year:
the horse's pasterns have fused

At 18 months:
his cannon bones are mature

At 30 months (2.5 yrs):
he now has stronger - but not entirely mature - knees (the small bones have fused), and his fetlock joints are mature

At 3 years:
the weight-bearing area at the base of the knees is fused, as well as his hindleg between hock and stifle

At 3-and-a-half:
the highest part of his foreleg, the humerus, is fused, as are parts of his femur, the area of his hindleg between stifle and hip

At 4 years:
the shoulder is fused, and the hocks and pelvis are now mature

At 5-and-a-half:
the growth plates over the centrum, which allows the spine to flex, become fused

I watched the Derby on tv and early in the program they mentioned that one of the entry's had only ran 3 races because of weak legs. I didn't catch the name of the horse, but was wondering if it was Eight Belles they were speaking about?

Did anybody else catch this?

As are all sports where animals are juiced. It's not just Major League Baseball anymore. Just wondering why the jockey did it at the finish line, as reported?

I have an idea. Let's have the trainers and owners run the same races as their horse. Maybe after a few heart attacks or broken bones and some trainers and oweners are put down we might end this foolishness.

I can't even watch the news reports about this. I think I'll go out and kiss the 21 year old mare I ride weekly. And we don't race - we amble.

Seems this has turned into a "Lets ban horse racing" because horses get injured. Lets apply the same logic to high school football, professional football and auto racing and etc. Then lets see if these same people really want to ban sports that have a high injury percentage!!
