....people play sports by choice, typically without drugs, and at least 15 years old. The horse racing industry is fully aware that racing young horses is very risky. They do it for money, without the consent of the main participant....

Nobody said to ban racing. Just don't race them until they are physically able to handle it. But big money talks, and these horses will continue to pay for it.

And to compare this to other sports which involve people who have the ability to THINK FOR THEMSELVES and CHOOSE to participate, is just insane.

Seems this has turned into a "Lets ban horse racing" because horses get injured. Lets apply the same logic to high school football, professional football and auto racing and etc. Then lets see if these same people really want to ban sports that have a high injury percentage!!

I don't remember when a person was put down because of a sports related injury, ie, broken leg or ankle.

The "athletes" have a choice. The horses don't

OK, point taken, although I do not agree. How about dog sled racing, for instants. Dogs die all the time in this sport and I do not believe any of the dogs signed up for this.

Perhaps, but it is not due to the fact that they (the dogs) are forced to do something when their bodies are not mature enough to do.

Stuff happens in all sports. Dogs die. Horses die. People die. All I am saying is that the horses should be given a fair chance to succeed in this sport. And that means NOT racing them at such a young age.

As far as I'm concerned, you can add dogs and any other animal to Mandrake's comments.

Very sad. (And there is no comparison whatsoever with sports involving people....)

I watched the Derby on tv and early in the program they mentioned that one of the entry's had only ran 3 races because of weak legs. I didn't catch the name of the horse, but was wondering if it was Eight Belles they were speaking about?

Did anybody else catch this?

ryoung

No the winner is the one that ran only 3 races...probably loose him in the Preakness.

...close to 800 race horses die or have to be put down yearly. About 3/4 of all horses are on Lasix in any given race.
They are said to lose up to 20 lbs. in weight through urination on race day, leaving a depleted, injury prone body. Google race horses dying, Lasix, or racing young horses. The information against this pastime is overwhelming and irrefutable.....

brand Name: Lasix
Generic Name: furosemide
FDA Drug Classification: loop diuretic

Action: Diuretics are given to help reduce the amount of fluid (water) in the body. They work by acting on the kidneys to increase the amount of urine passed.

Adverse Effects: -Increased loss of potassium from the body. Increase foods with high potassium content such as bananas or citrus fruits (or juices).
-Dizziness, lightheadedness or fainting may occur.

I don't know about race horses, but sled dogs do "sign up".
They live to pull sleds, they love it. When you start hooking the dogs up, you have to tie down the sled to keep the dogs from taking off. If you fall off the sled, you will be lucky to see your dogs again, they love pulling so much, they just keep going. Any dog that dies pulling a sled died happy.
