We found this company to be very good. The only way to really tell is to have a claim and see how (or if) it is handled. We did have a claim and San Xavier was very good! We would not use anyone else.

I agree with San Xavier as the best insurance for Mexico. A friend from Nanaimo had a claim and it was paid and the work was repaired in Nanaimo as well. They also have a 6 month policy which saves a person a lot of money rather than going with the standard 12 month policy. We used to have Lewis & Lewis but found the service was anything but great. It seems that a lot of Canucks will be heading to Celestino this winter and we look forward to saying hi to all and enjoying the peacefulness of the area. Yes, there are not a lot of things to do there, except visit the town of La Cruz which has a very large deparment/grocery store and of course the Corona Depot is also there. Chris, the owner of Celestino RV Park also arranges side trips to various areas and is most helpful in assuring that you have a pleasant stay. We are taking the Lukeville crossing as well, and will. We will do some shopping in Yuma and then dry camp just south of Why at the 14 day free area, and early the next day will cross the border and make it just south of Santa Anna where a Pemex will be our stop for the evening, and for the next night as well and hopefully we will get to Celestino on the 3rd day. Toll roads are going to be our choice this time and they can be costly, but a lot safer and more enjoyable with less traffic, although the scenery is not as great as the libre. Another point to consider is to keep your toll tickets in case you have an accident as you will be reimburesed for any mishaps. Have a safe trip and we will be there on Nov. 15.

Could you please expand on the "keep your ticket to be reimbursed"? Does the toll charge include some type of insurance?

Yes, your toll includes insurance while on the road and I've read of people who used it and it was good.

I've used Lewis and Lewis for years but only recently had to call them in for a fender bender. They insure you through Qualitas a major insurance company down here, I had no problems and it all worked as it should. It wasn't a serious accident though and no injuries. What about the L&L service did you feel was not great?

Jonna, They never returned my calls and a friend that I recommended to Lewis & Lewis had a very serious incident regarding getting proper insurance for their rig and their calls were never returned as well. The thing I like about San Xavier is their 6 month policy which can save a lot of money as most of us Canucks can only be out of the country for 6 months anyway. Living in B.C., our ICBC insurance coverage is, of course, not effctive in Mexico, but we can apply to ICBC for the time we are in Mexico and be reimbursed by ICBC. Remember, also, to claim the cost of private health insurance on your next years income tax, for Canucks, as it is a deductible expense.

Well, that is true. I've never been able to get them on the phone but they do answer emails quickly so I didn't think of it as a big fault. When I called their accident number in Merida they answered and sent someone out, but it took awhile. I thought the ING guy who got there right away, the other guy's insurance, was nicer and definitely faster. I'm going to have to switch anyway since I'm not a tourist and I think the L&L is not for residents. I'd hate to find that out the hard way.

Hey, Patsy - we are going to be in Celestino for Nov/Jan/Feb - our first RV trip to Mexico as well. We will be coming from Alberta, so are stopping in Phoenix for a couple of days to visit the in-laws and then heading to Nogales. Can anyone give an easier way - sounds like Nogales isn't the most "first-time" friendly border crossing. Look forward to meeting you all there - Bev and Art - Water Valley, AB, Canada

Actually, Nogales isn't a bad border crossing. We have gone through there (and back) for the past two winters and we haven't had a problem.

Just avoid the period just before and just after Christmas, you should be OK.

bb50, Nogales is an easy crossing. The problem is because it is a busy crossing, the wait time in lines can be long. When traveling South, best times are early morning or afternoon. Traveling North, best is around 10am to about 2pm. Winter holidays are always long because it is the season for USA Mexicans traveling South for the Holidays. Coming from Phoenix, Nogales is the easiest crossing traveling to Celestino.
