I didn't change the fluorescent's on the ceiling but I changed all the other interior lights to xenon bulbs. 5 and 10 watts depending on their location. More light, lower wattage than incandescent.I tried a few LED's but they didn't give enough light. I did leave an led in the outside door light.
XENON BI-PIN CLEAR LIGHT BULBS

We are very happy with the 10w xenon fixtures we installed. The adaptor base for the xenon bulbs sounds like a good idea for existing fixtures. My fixtures came from Sailor Sam's.

I do see what looks like much improved led fixtures on that site now. Would love to hear if the new generation of leds work well for directional use like reading lights. The tide may be turning in the lumens-per-watt and acceptable-light-quality measures.

Why do you want to replace the bulbs??? The answer to this will determne whether the added expense of LED is worth it. If you are replacing flourescent, the led is only slightly more efficient. Led is significantly more effecient than incandescent. If you absolutely positively must have the light on, running lights etc, high/hard to get to bulb, led is definitely worth it. If the quality of the light output is an issue, buy one from someplace you can return it if it is not suitable.

Last year I replaced my rear clearance lights with LEDs. My previous MH was a old metal skinned unit and the clearance lights were in a constant state of flicker & flash. Every trip caused poor grounds or loose bulbs etc. My current one is a two wire system (fiberglass skin)but it had the same old problems of corrosion and just poor connections.

I found a good deal on the JC Whitney site for dual LED clearance lights and purchased them. Ripped out all the old ones, soldered all the connections and sealed them and pop-riveted them all back in. Took a 3000 mile trip in Oct 07 and did not have a problem with any of them. No more climbing on the roof and screwing around with bad wireing and bad bulbs.

If you have a older unit the clearance lights are the 1st item you may want to change out.

As far as replacing parking and tail lights with LEDs you may have problems with the flashers which depend on a specfic resistance to make them work.

I tried some panel LED bulbs in the interior lights (36 LED on flat panel). It was not bright enough to replace incandescent bulbs.

Super Bright LED

Interested in the Xenon bulbs though. Is there a difference in the heat generated by the Xenon bulbs ? I have 1141 bulbs now, what wattage would offer the same light, 5, 10 or 20 watt

The xenons have very good light quality for reading. They run cooler than halogens but similar color temp. My inexpensive recessed puck came with a 10w bulb and that's well sized. I figured I was replacing an equivalent 18w incandescent and ending up with more lumens. I'd try the 10w unless you don't need the brightness for task lighting.

Hey deltabravo - how's the light output of that LED in the porch light??? That is the one fixture I HAVEN'T replaced yet - just haven't found a decent LED bulb for it... ST

Both the amber 1156 and the white 1156 in LED make a reasonably good replacement for the porch light. THe white definately gives off more light though, making it a little bit better.

I noticed at Flying J that they had 1157's I think with about 5 LEDs in them but they would have to be pointing out to work. I think they were about $15 however.
