Is it true that, in some areas,
it is ILLEGAL to talk on a cell phone while driving
but
it is LEGAL to look at a GPS map while driving?
If so..................WEIRD !

Both should be outlawed. The Texas law prohibts video display equipment in view of the driver. Apparently GPS screens don't apply or it is not being enforced. There are so many people swerving in and out of their lane while playing with the GIZMOS! Dangerous gizmos. Alot of folks have to have a LAW in order to know something is dangerous, while others are could care less if there is a law or not. Laws don't give out common sense unfortuately.

Does seem strange. It could also be illegal to play with your stereo. I know of accidents caused by that. I suppose there has to be some point where only the worst problems are addressed. Otherwise, you couldn't talk to any passengers while driving, or listen to the radio, because those are distractions too.
DW is navigator and communicator. She talks on the cell phone - I refuse while driving. She runs the GPS and keeps me on course. She monitors the Pressure Pro and CB radio. I don't even talk much while driving. I like to stay focused on the road and everything around me. I need all the focus I can get.

Do I have to turn off my rear-view camera in Texas?
I'm not sure of the problem here. I program my GPS to tell me how to get to where I'm going, then I drive. When it tells me to turn right, I turn right, etc. It tells me in enough time when to change lanes so I can do so safely (unlike the person in the passenger's seat that tells me "You just passed your turn.").
Are these people programming their GPS while driving?

In the state of Washington people driving and texting have caused so many accidents,that they passed a law that makes it illegal to drive and text.. It is secondary so the officer has to have another reason to pull you over and then can give you a ticket for both.. They are now saying that GPS ,etc in a lot of the new cars are now climbing into the causing more accident catagories..And yes,even though it is illegal in a number of states to have video type equipment in the drivers view,auto manufacturers are installing it anyway and getting a ton of extra money for it.. Besides,I can still get more mileage out of a free state map than paying for a GPS system that I can't trust to send me down the right road..

In New Jersey it is illegal to talk on the cell phone while driving. It is now a primary offence and you can be stopped for it.

I have my computer next to me on the center console of my work truck,I have a gps program installed on it. I program it, and forget it. I rely on it for everything. I make my living on the road and i was never so glad to get rid of the stack of maps I had in my truck. I am surprised I never got into an accident looking at a map while driving down the road. I dont see why anyone would need to play with the gps once it is set.

A cellphone uses what little attention the driver normally uses to operate the vehicle and removes it from the machine completely.
A GPS used sensibly (set up routing or general map navigation) mounted on top of the panel within view of the driver keeps the drivers head up instead of looking in the back seat floorboard for a map.
IF (and that's a big if nowadays) the person has any brains to use a tool sensible to start with, there's a big difference between removing all intelligence from the drivers seat via an unrelated conversation vs piloting the vehicle and following the arrow especially in heavy traffic.

Lets see, what do I do to distract myself while driving the MH? I regularly check my mirrors, my backup camera that shows me the toad and cars behind the toad, my instrument display (speed, temp, voltage, oil pressure), and every now and then I will steal a quick glance at the GPS. I really do not need to check the GPS as it verbally tells me the routing, but it shows me the road ahead and I like that, I do not talk on the cell phone as that does distract me, all of these things give me information that I feel helps me on my way and are not distracting to me.
