Just back from a pond fishing trip in the Wayne National Forest. Got skunked by Kristi again, she caught all the fish (pumpkin sunfish and bluegill). Just could not show the bass anything they wanted. But did Big Rick find the mother load of shrooms. The morels are up and strong this year in SE Ohio. Get um while you can!!!!

I don't know if this is true or not but I've heard the best time to hunt mushrooms is after an electrical storm. Lightning charges the air with nitrogen(?) which makes the mushrooms pop out.

How do you know which mushrooms you can eat?

Every year around here (NorCal) we have people die or needing new livers, do you have that problem with the mushrooms where you are? Me, I'm sticking to the ones I get in the store.

Wayne,
I was taught by the old kin folks and read up in books on the subject. There are many editable mushrooms out there but you can only be wrong once on many. Know what you are eating! Also search "morel mushroom" my favorite!

On edit: If you like mushrooms and you find a morel in the woods and eat one you will know and search for them the rest of your life!

Wayward1,

Just a note to let you know that I sent you a PM a while back (probably while you were on your fishing trip).

mushroom checking. Helps to have a PIA coworker to test them. Lacking the coworker or using them all up. I heard you boil the mushroom, then dip in a silver dollar, if it turns black, throw it back. Seems like there ought to be a swab test from the csi folks to easily check.

Funny this topic should come up. A few weeks ago we had a good shower (I wouldn't call it an electrical storm) come though and the next day I had a ton of the white button cap mushrooms come up under the oak trees in my back yard. Since I love mushrooms of all types, I was thinking about a nice big harvest. I have see squirrels enjoying these white beauties and thought they were safe BUT!!! NO I did not pick em. I got on line and did a little research and come across many articles on the suject of safe mushrooms for humans. I had heard of the tell of boiling mushrooms with the silver coin, spoon, etc. That was quickly debunked. I decided it was best to buy mushrooms. It would seem like an interesting hobby but I would need to do a lot more research before I would actually eat one I had picked.
This is an interesting read. Or I thought so anyway.

Glad to hear of you skeptics, you have to know what you are doing or you will end up very ill or worse. Any way, the competition is stiff so I don't necessarily mind those who go to the store for theirs!

Raften: Not as much as one would think. In this part of the country most who hunt grew up doing it and the knowledge is passed down.

Morels are supposed to fail safe to pick because of their distinctive coral-like surface...BUT... there is also a schroom called "false Morel" that can do you in. We had a well-meaning neighbor give us a bag full of the bad ones he had picked. They did the same favor for other friends. We had guests so were a while getting to them. Before cooking I keyed them out with a good guide and found the problem. He and his wife spent a few days in hospital getting transfused, the other recipients got the warning in time and hadn't eaten any. Everyone came out OK in the end. I have picked several varieties, cooked them up in butter and still chickened out and tossed them. What bothers me in the end is the back cover of the Dover guide I used which says " This handy book by the late Mr.Kreiger....." I just can't get past that.

Cheers!
