We're planning a trip from Maryland to Frankenmuth Mi and on to Mackinac Island then on to Niagara Falls. Any good campground ideas?

Frankenmuth Jellystone Park (Get the deluxe site it's bigger).

Mackinaw City Mill Creek CG

Don't forget to take the people ferry out to mackinaw island for a full day of fun.

If you go to Mackinac Island, be sure to get fudge at Joannes, best I've ever had.

For camping around Mackinaw City, if you are a State Park type, I would highly recommend Wilderness State Park. You can be from your campsite to the Island ferry in about 15 minutes. It is very remote, yet close enough to local attractions. It's one of our all time favorite spots.

The Yogi Bear in Frankenmuth is very nice and the KOA Lundy's Lane on the Canadian side at Niagara Falls is our favorite in that area.

Other good possibilities for Mackinac area are Straits SP and St Ignace KOA, both in/near St Ignace, on the UP side of the Strait.

The problem with the Jellystone in Frankenmeuth is that the sites are very cramped and you can't have a fire on your site. Good place I guess for an overnighter and you need activities for the kids.

Another option is Pine Ridge which is about halfway from the highway to Frankenmueth on the corner. Many wooded spots, lots of pull thrus and many larger sites (and smaller ones too). Fire on your site. Full hookups as well.

As for Mackinac, good ideas already given there. Mill Creek is fantastic, just don't stay in the full hookup "bridge view" section. Very cramped. If you can get by with just electric and water there are tons of huge sites to camp on.
The KOA is also good as are both state parks as mentioned.

On the Island take the horse carriage tour, well worth a couple hours of your time.

Here's another vote for Wilderness State Park. It's beautiful! You can camp on the loop along Lake MI or in the loop across which though not right on the lake with beautiful sunsets, is usually less congested and has paved pads. Be sure to visit the downtown area in Mackinac City if anyone enjoys gift shops. Visit the historical fort - very good interpretors and you can usually witness an archaeological dig in process and talk to the historians. On the island, renting a bike to tour around the island is fun, or if that's not appealing, the horse and buggy tours are enjoyable and we thought worth the price.
Have fun!

I second Pine Ridge in Frankenmuth...

As for coming up through Michigan (assuming you will be entering Michigan via Ohio) avoid taking I-75 through Detroit as it is closed until some time in 2009...I suggest picking up US-23 just south of Toledo, ON and yaking it north until it reconnects with I-75 in Flint, MI then continue on up I-75 north to exit #136 which is the exit for Frankenmuth, MI
