Our son is hiking the Pacific Crest Trail this summer and will be passing close to Lake Tahoe in July or early August. DW and I are thinking about trying to meet him when he gets to the Lake Tahoe area. I have been looking for full hook up RV Parks in the South Lake Tahoe area, and there don't seem to be too many. We have a 35' 5th wheel.

Our problem is, at this point, we have no way of knowing when he will reach that area. I would assume that due to the fact there are not many RV parks that will accommodate our trailer, we will need to make reservations early, and due to the fact we don't know when he will be there, that is a problem. Also, except for a couple of parks, the web sites seem to be pretty vague, not many pictures.

I guess what I need is some suggestions and recommendations on parks. We have never been to that area, but from the pictures I have seen, it appears to be beautiful.

Thanks for any info you can send my way.

Tahoe Valley RV Park has FH and a pool and is the closest park to the trail in the South Lake area. Have fun

You'll be hard pressed to find anything around the lake on short notice unless you're going midweek. You really have to reserve a spot months in advance around the lake. Camp Richardson would probably suit your needs if you could get a spot. However, the trail passes by several nice campgrounds just outside the basin. If you don't know when you you'll be there you'd be better off picking one of these. Something like Donner Lake SP might do.

Might check out Carson City, only about 30 miles down the hill.

Tahoe Valley Campground and Zephyr Cove have full hookups. Zephyr Cove is way over priced IMHO. Campground by the Lake is by far the best campground but they don't have full hookups. Some sites have elec. & water, some have just elec. We stay for 10 days in the dry camp sites with no problem. Water spigots are plentifull and they will come and dump you for a nominal fee.

DD and I hiked the PCT in July 2007 from I 80 (at Donner Summit rest area) north to Sierra City.

Anyone that has not crossed I80 by the end of July will not make it all the way to Canada.

If it was like last year there will be times where it is 10 miles between water stops. A GPS unit with downloaded waypoints for all known water sources will be very helpful.

The camp host at Jackson Meadows Reservoir had free outdoor warm showers for PCT hikers

The only campgrounds near where we were did not have hookups.

Donner State Park is probably only about 5 miles from the trail, no hookups that I know of.

The PCT goes directly through Jackson Meadows Reservoir campground, again no hookups.

In Sierra City it goes through another campground, again no hookups.

This is a trip where it would have been helpful to be self contained.

Your best chance of full hookups would likely be Truckee.

Have you considered joining him for a section? From I80 to Sierra City is only 38 miles. DD (27) and I (54) did it in 3.5 days. There is more downhill than uphill for that stretch.
