You will pay a road use tax in the State you register the RV in.
The rate will vary per State and I understand some States have no tax.
When I was in the RV business all units I sold to out of state buyers got a thirty day tag to use until they got back to where they would register the unit.

Happy Camping !!

This is the way it is suppose to work. My attitude is never pay any taxes in a state that you will not register the vehicle, wait until you register in your home state and then pay the taxes due. Buyer beware; recovering taxes paid in another state after the fact is almost impossible. If the selling dealer or state won't cooperate go else where.

The posters who said to check with the dmv are correct. My ex & I bought a Jeep Liberty in Indiana not knowing they did not have a reciprical with South Dakota, so we had to pay tax to both states. If it had been an rv there was a reciprical. So every state is different& the laws are always changing .

I talked to the sales manager at the dealership we are buying the rig and he said they will not charge sales tax. I will pay in CA when I register the vehicle .

If you live in California and you buy a coach in Nevada, you do not have to pay the sales tax if you keep the coach out of California for 90 days. Read the rules from the Board of Equalization and it will explain the whole thing. You can register the coach in California and you will pay a hefty price for the tags, but no user or sales tax. Just save all your reciepts to when they audit you, you will have proof that you were out of state for 90 days.

I am a licensed Auto dealer.
I've sold hundreds of vehicles to out of state residents.

You only pay the sales tax based on your State of residence, or
the address you provide on the bill of sale.

Some States do have arrangements with each other to collect tax, but it is based on your home States tax rate.

You would never need to pay "double" or both sales taxes.

If the your home State does not have a agreement with the State you are purchasing from,

They do not collect ANY sales tax.
They would however provide you with a Bill of Sale, A State Tax form, and a odometer statement.

Which you would take to your DMV and pay the Sales tax before they would update Title & provide license plates.

I deal in this tax area daily and I would highly suggest anyone go to the tax authority in both the state of residence and the state of potential purchase before making the decision.

But is is not at all inappropriate to say that, at the end of the process, you will have paid it only one time and at the rate of your home state.

A lot depends on the dealer and the state. State, buying and state titling. I know in FL the dealer will charge titling state sales tax, then remit to the state if they have an agreement. Some states have no reciprocity. If no reciprocity you have to do a stateline delivery, you go to GA, ther is a notary there and you sign the docs. Pay tax when you get home.

Some states only allow a portion to be paid. IE their tax is 6& and FL can only charge 3% of it.

Cool thing with CA, if you buy out of state, and not return for 90 days, you don't have to pay CA. Of course, as in the FL example, you would need to do a stateline delivery. This will cost a little.

It depends on the state where you buy, as well as the state where you register, so there is no simple answer.

Some states insist on collecting a sales tax, at time of sale, on all motor vehicle purchases. Depending on reciprocal tax agreements, this may or may not be credited to you California tax.

Some states do not collect a sales tax on vehicles going out of state.

Some states (like mine) do not collect a sales tax on motor vehicles, even though the state has a substantial sales tax.

Some states collect no sales tax on anyting.

No that is not appropriate to say. If you choose the wrong pair of states, you can end up paying the full tax in both states.

CA has different laws on this then most states. Basically, you have to take delivery outside of the state of CA. When I bought my MH (just a few weeks ago) the dealer in CA had a driver take it to Reno, where we met up with a Notary, and signed documents stating that I took delivery in NV. I do not live in CA, and was registering it in my home state of AK, where we do not have sales tax. I've tried to buy cars in CA, but if it's from a dealer, and the tires hit the road in CA, you have to pay the sales tax. The dealer has to drive it out of state. I’ve purchased vehicles in WA, OR & ID and just got a trip permit for $10.00 and was good to go, but not CA.
