Howdy,
Thanks in advance for all help!
My wife and I both prefer percolated coffee. In preparing for dry camping we bought a camp percolator to use on the burner.
Our first practice turned out ok, but perhaps one of you can
shorten our learning curve on times and temps.
6 cups water,3 scoops coffee, reduced temp to medium after it
started to perk. Let it go for 10 mins, it was kind of strong.
Thanks again.

French Press. Heat the water over the burner, pour in the french press for excellent coffee.

Yeah, start to perk, turn it down (before it boils over the stove -hah)10 minutes seems long for me. I usually wait until I can smell the coffee then give it about 3 more minutes. Turns out fine. Of course, coffee is a matter of personal taste, but if it's to strong don't perk it so long. It didn't taste right when I used less grounds.

Should have made excellent coffee, just cut down on the brew time until you reach the point YOU like. I use 10 cups water to 5 Tbsp coffee grounds, boil, cut heat back till slopping out the spout stops, brew until I think it smells good.............. And also always make it outside, sun, rain or snow, that way it wakes all the neiboughs up with the aroma............ And I love my coffee at 05:30 a.m.

Sounds like you have a couple things working against you. Seems to me that you used too much coffee for the water you had and let it perk a bit too long. We have a 14 cup pot and use 5 scoops of coffee and let it perk for 7 minutes.

You can get a coffee spoon at Wally World and do one scoop for every two cups. We use 100% Columbia Walmart brand and after it starts to perk we let it continue for 3min. and we love it.

Read in Consumer Report that 100% Columbia was the closest to restaurant coffee.

Jack,

I'd try cutting the bewing time first too. I'm not sure if you mean "strong" as in "bitter" which is mainly brewing time, or as in just too much flavor which is grounds. You're about ballpark on the amount of coffee grounds for my taste.

If you are putting the basket in with cold water, you might want to try bringing the pot to a boil before putting the basket in. It helps prevent boil overs caused by lack of attention (compounded by lack of caffine ).

WOW! You Canadaians sure sleep late! Seriously, the smell of coffee mixed with woodsmoke is the smell of camping. And somehow the touch of bitterness from a perc pot just completes the experience. Having the first pot of coffee brewing in the morning is a great way to meet your neighbors.

For the record, I'm drinking coffee from a French Press as I write this.
