We are planning a trip for the end of September to Hatteras NC. It is our first big trip since moving to the East Coast. We are starting from a point generally south of Pittsburg, but in West Virginia. Anyway, here is my question(s).
Which is the best route to take? Where should we stay enroute? Generally we will be taking I-64 East from where it meets I-81 once we get out of West Virginia that is!
Thank you all!

Are you coming from the Morgantown area? I'm guessing your taking 68 east to 70 to 81? This route is roughly 620 miles. You could also take 81 to 66 east and then 17 south to 95 then go to 64 at Richmond. This route would save you roughly 70 miles. You can save another 15 miles by taking 522 south at Hancock, MD to Winchester and meeting up with 81 there.
So the shortest route would be I 68 east to 522 south to 37 south to I 81 south to I 66 east to 17 south to I 95 south to I 295 south to I 64 east to I 664 south to I 64 west (trust me here) to 168 south which turns into 158 east to 12 south. This is about 10 hours driving.
There is a Flying J at Carmel Church on I 95 that is about halfway.
Take the route you want but that drive is much more than 10 hours It will take you close to 2 hrs to get to Hatteras after you cross the North Carolina state line plus you are going thru Hampton, Norfolk and Virginia Beach. My2cents
We head down often, I live on the North side of Richmond,VA within a mile of 95 and 295 interchange.
I would suggest doing your route east on 64, just west of Richmond, take 295 east/south headed over to 95, stay on 295 around Richmond to rte 460, take 460 to Sufolk Then pick up 58, This will take you into the back side of Cheasapeake, you will actually end up back on 64 headed west then get on 168 to 158 which will take you to the Outer Banks. This will take you around the congestion near Newport News and the Hampton Roads Tunnel.
Sounds like a lot of twist and turn but it really is not, once you get to Sufolk there are signs to the outer banks.
After being on all the interstates 460 is a laid back ride, few towns, plenty of places to stop and most of it is 55/60 mph.
From 295/95 It takes us 5.5 to 6hr's to get to Camp Hatteras or Ocean Waves. This includes a stop at Seamark Foods on the right about 1 mile after you cross the bridge over the Sound. They have good prices on local seafood.
Enloy your trip

Me and the family are going to Hatters the 22nd of May. We will be staying at Camp Hatteras Resort & RV Park . We stayed in Kitty Hawk last time prior to having our RV. As said, it is a spectacular place. We will leave their and go to Apex NC, on Jordon Lake. A very nice state park and I recommend it. Then off to a place I would move to today if my wife would let me. Blowing Rock Nc,What a beautifully place.
Thanks for the replies everyone. Sounds like MandKFarmer's directions are the way to go. It does sound a bit confusing but I will google map it and it should be fine--after all I am a visual person!
Awesome information on the seafood stop! That is exactly what I was going to ask next! Growing up on the water, having moved inland, we are missing the fresh seafood and we are really looking forward to some good quality seafood while we are there.
Any suggestions on where to stay enroute? Looking at the area around Williamsburg on the way down and Shenandoah National Park on the way back. I know there is a lot of info about Williamsburg, I will search for that today too. Thanks everyone and keep the ideas rolling!
BTW rnr42005, we are discovering that too. The Blue and Grey celebration is coming soon!
If you are looking at a stopover in Williamsburg, that will kinda force you to go thru the 664 Tunnel... If you come down 460 at the Town of Wakefield, hang a left on rte 31 like going to the Jamestown Ferry, then a right on Rte 10. Chippokes State Park is in that area. You can Google that.
Also, if you don't mind Ferry rides...you can come from Williamsburg to the Jamestown Ferry and rte 31 to 460. Lots of extra driving.
If you really would like to do Williamsburg then take the 664 route thru the Monitor/Merrimack Tunnel. DO NOT go the Hampton Roads Tunnel.
Hatteras Campgrounds stay booked, make your reservations soon. We have stayed at Camp Hatteras, Ocean Waves and Frisco Woods, all are great Campgrounds.
Careful going down 460, around Disputanta they are doing a lot of road work, down to 1 lane in some areas. Also a heavy Police presence, so keep the pedal soft. Also, to avoid Richmond altogether, try South 288 off of 64E, then take Rt. 10 to 295 through Chester. I'm not sure if it cuts any time, but it keeps you out of the congestion.
