1st night camp-out dinner is ALWAYS and cooked over an open fire:

Hot Dogs & Chili (no beans)
Ranch Style Beans
Green Beans
Smores

Each night we always have a campfire, unless we have to get up early and leave the next day. And if there is a fire...there is ALWAYS smores!

(Photos below were taken in 1991)

Thanks all for the great insights. Many of which we will borrow (or steal) for our family. By the way, we pick up our new 5th wheel on our 28th anniversary....YEA both for the wonderful 28 yrs and for the new 5er.

We do not have many traditions. Long ago I taught the kids how to set up the camper (way back with our popup). That continues today. I don't hear the word "Dad" during the setup. Once we unhook, the kids get to work without me. That includes running the slide out.

One main tradition is that I cook a pancake breakfast every day. Dad's pancakes are viewed as a treat. Those few who do not go for pancakes get cooked-to-order eggs. While on trips DW gets a break and rarely cooks.

home school dad,
I have a friend who has 8 children and home schools too. Six girls and two boy book ends (oldest and youngest). Are you the teacher or is it your wife? Probably both to some degree. I have to tell you, they are the loveliest family I know. I bet yours is nice too. Just something special about those homeschooling families.
Best wishes, Deb

home school dad - Our kids also set up camp. The kids might call "Dad" with a question but he doesn't mind because he's already relaxing in the camp chair. I make most dinners when we camp but that's my only chore. DH and the kids set up and clean up during mealtimes and care for the 4 year old. I get the most hugs, though.

marites62,

Glad you enjoyed the photos...the smiles on my kid's faces tell the whole story about family camp-out 'traditions' for sure. LOL.

AFChappy,

Congrats on the new RV and 28th anniversary. We will be celebrating our 28th in July!

we're new to this but so far....

sack dinner on the road...since dh and I both work we often pull out late enough that we wouldn't get to our destination in time for dinner so I make the kids all sandwiches and trail mix and they eat en-route.

Jump rope, pulls kids in from all over the camp ground. I love the no Dad or Mom, first 30 minuts, I think I may even write down a check list of what the girls are to be doing while dad does the dad things, ie they pull out the chairs put blocks under the leveler legs pull out and lay the outside carpet. They are good at these things but I have to remind them about 10 times. Easier to do my self, but the girls love to help, 6 and 7yrs old. I may have to do the reflector tape eyes trick on my wife! Good fun! thanks

This was such a great idea! My DD (married now with 14 month old) & my 13 yr old don't consider it camping if I don't make sausage gravy! When we tent camped, they ate it over toast, then we graduated to a pop-up & a toaster oven. And lots of games - dominoes, rummy & our newest Texas Hold 'Um! I think I'm going to try the reflector tape eyes!
