We are traveling by Motorhome to Duluth for 4 nights and Bayfield, Wi for 2 this summer with 2 children. Does anyone have a campground recommendation. Your help is appreciated. We will be traveling in August of this year.
You will probably need reservations, the lake shore is very popular.
If you want to stay in Duluth, Spirit Mountain is close in and is on a hill overlooking the lake. Jay Cooke SP is about 20 miles south of Duluth, nicely wooded.
Bayfield, WI has a private CG, I think it is called Apostle Island CG, on the south end of town. There is a city CG on the north side, very heavily wooded and right on the lake.
There is another CG north of town, called Buffalo Bay, haven't been in that one, so I don't know what it is like.
Further north of town is the Town of Russell CG, it is at the Sand Bay visitor center of the Apostle Island Nat Lake shore. This is the one we like, it is about 1/2 block from the lake, there is some playground equipment for the kids, nice sandy beach if you like cold water. Clean restrooms and a shower house. It's the jump off point for lake kayakers.
If you take the ferry over to Madeline Island, Big Bay SP is on the island, can get expensive taking the ferry if you are going to go back and forth.
If you do a search on this forum, you will find a lot of info on the cg's.
I stayed at that campground in Bayfield. It is decent. Not the most modern, but a nice clean facility with decent sites. Nice owners. I'll definitely stay there again the next time I get up to Bayfield.
As for the Duluth side, my recommendation would be to roll up to Two Harbors and check out Burlington Bay. It's right on the lake just on the north side of town. Has full hookups. Two Harbors is 20 minutes north of Duluth on 61. And that puts you closer to the more interesting things on the north shore, such as Gooseberry Falls, Split Rock Lighthouse, etc.

We have stayed at Burlington Bay. It is in a good location as Olson indicated; great lake front, and close to a lot of site seeing. however it is pretty crowded and very "RV-Park-like" If you can do without the hook-ups, you might try one of the state parks. They would have a more "woodsy tree-hugging-type feel" with great hiking, and a lot of nature but you definitely wouldn't have the lake view like Burlington Bay. I personally prefer the state parks but wouldn't mind staying at Burlington Bay again.
I just looked at theState Park Map and did notice that you did say "Duluth area" so Burlington bay would be closer to Duluth (and the good stuff on the north shore). However if you are are on your way up from Iowa, you might want to stay at Banning, Moose Lake, or J-Cook State Park on the way up or back for a night? (We have stayed at Banning and Moose Lake and enjoyed them equally) We haven't stayed at J-cook, but have heard it is just as nice.
Wherever you stay you will defiantly want to make reservations well in advance!
Good Luck,

Cloquet/Duluth KOA.
It has pull thru sites and just out of Duluth. It's not far from anywhere, kids enjoy it they have a pool! Also a hot tub, game room, laundry and store.

I prefer state parks as well, but I don't always think of state parks for motorhomes, as the sites in some of those state parks up there are smaller and tight. But definitely a better experience if you can boondock. Last time I camped at Gooseberry, our site didn't have any hookups, but it was still great. Split rock isn't an option for RVers....just walk-in and cart-in tent sites. Tettegouche is a fantastick park and it's in off the road a ways, but we had a nasty experience with a bear at that park (not the bear's fault...it was my own stupidity). I haven't been to any of the state parks north of there though.
