I have a very unique situation. I have a one site only parking spot for my 5er which is for the summer months. The thing about it is there is no turn around at the bottom of the hill. No problem in the spring when I will bring it down there, but I'm just a little uneasy next fall when it is time to leave. I had no problem last year when I backed a 12000# 5er up the 30 plus degree grade, now I have one that weighs closer to 16000#, with an 06 F-350 6.0 CC SB FX4 18K Reese pushing it. The distance is about 100' backwards uphill. Will it get it done like I suspect it will without blowing something out? I've been backing up stuff all my life, but never something of this magnitude. Any expert advice is much appreciated. I'm more concerned with the hitch paying me a visit through the back window than I am with the truck unable to get it done. Thanks for your advice.

I checked your profile to see that you have a 4x4. If you put it in 4Lo you go to a 2:1 ratio which will allow you to move it easier. The only issue is if you have to turn too far off center while backing. As you know, 4WD tends to cause binding or bucking in the front if you have to turn too hard, depending on what surface you're driving on. You didn't mention what the surface is.

As far as the hitch visiting - I think it is strong enough for pulling and pushing. Remember the hitch takes a strain during braking. Yes, the 5er brakes are keeping the full weight off of it, but going slow up hill shouldn't put that big of a strain on the hitch.

Is your 4wd ESOF or manual locking hubs?
I did not order ESOF so I could put the transfer case in 4 low and get the gear reduction without having the 4wd on pavement issues.

Hi,

With 4 wheel drive and low range, you are much better off than someone without 4 WD. The problem is how many horsepower the engine can make at only 900 RPM. It is actually very limiting. With a manual transmission, there is even higher limits, because the engine can not rev up while sitting still, like with a automatic transmission.

If you don't succeed on the first try, try it at a slightly higher speed, and the increased engine RPM should provide enough power!

If you don't have a transmission temperature gauge, get one! The transmission can heat up a lot when moving very slowly, especially when a lot of horsepower is going through the engine.

Fred.

Thanks for the replies. It is a straight shot with really no turning involved, and it is on pavement. The truck has both ESOF plus manual locking hubs. Probably the main thing is just make sure to do it the first time without stopping.

Any further advice is much appreciated.

If the hitch will pull the trailer without breaking, it will certainly hold up pushing the trailer, unless it's defective or improperly installed.

Watch the transmission temp as it will climb very fast.

Put it in 4-Low with the hubs unlocked. If the truck can pull the trailer forward up the hill, it should be able to push it backward.
