Save yourself a lot of problems and leave the shotgun at home.

Leaving the shotgun behind is probably the best advice you have received but, if you decide to bring it along, just remember - it is for hunting. No matter what the question, the gun is for HUNTING. Us Canucks aren't allowed to defend ourselves. Many of us are armed but we only use our weapons for hunting.

Forget the shotgun unless you have papers you are registered to participate in a target shoot, hunting trip with papers stating such. Under no circumstances tell them you are carrying it to defend yourself. Take it to UPS and ship it to family member or friend. That's what we had to do years ago when we had a shotgun.

Should you ever decide to do Mexico, they do not allow guns under any circumstances, will confiscate it, maybe your coach and arrest or jail you.

Somehow shipping a shotgun UPS makes me feel like I live on another planet or something...and it makes me chuckle. It is just something I've never seen and probably will never see. It's like the first time I saw someone post photos of their gun rack in their rig (more chuckling). Sorry...don't worry about me, I am just a naive city gal (never done any hunting) and Canadian (we Canucks don't often receive guns in the mail). More chuckling....

well lookee here....the ad above my Reply screen? 'Front Sight Firearms Training Institute'....man, that bugs me.....I see now too, that it's a flash ad...."Gun fights don't give second chances."

Is it just me that is bugged? I mean...this IS an RV site...

What I was going to add to the posts about the shotgun was....if you lie and say 'no gun' and they find it...you will get fined, maybe loose your rig, perhaps jailed. oh...maybe that's what this outfit trains people to do? hide the guns?

I appreciate all your thoughts-since we are fulltime and all our worldly possessions fit in the cabinets and basement of a 42' mh and the bed of a pickup truck (how sad is that!)...we will be taking all our possessions with us as we travel.
the gun is just another 'thing' we own. we will fill out all the proper forms, pay all the necessary fees and see how it shakes out. my husband is a former law enforcement officer, and as such, respects guns. it wasn't my choice to carry a firearm, we've never used it (except to practice on a friend's property), but i must say, i do feel comfortable with it.
so, with all that said....i will report to the forum of what our experiences were after we cross the border.
i think, from what most have said, that border crossing experiencing are directly related to the person who gets to handle your rig....
keep your fingers crossed we get a kind soul!

LarryandPaua,
Try crossing at Calais from Maine into NB. Years ago we crossed there, had the gun question asked, showed them my stainless steel 12 gauge pump shotgun that I had for years when I lived on a sailboat in the Caribbean. Agent said nice gun but no guns in Canada unless you can show papers you are signed to enter a target shoot or have signed with a guided hunting service. Remember, I am now in Canada. Asked, "what do I do?" answer, check it here and pick it up on your way back; problem we were rentering in MI; now what? Answer: "Turn your rig around, go back through the crossing, two blocks on the left to the ACE hardware and hw will ship it for $25. Did that and he shipped it to friend in AZ where I picked it up. He had a young man packing guns for UPS shipment, dozens of them, for people in the same position, and this was several years before 9-11. Good luck. We learned real quick we were in Canada, not the U.S., same as MX.

Lynden has a wooded park with camping, Berthusen. It's a few miles south of the border, and a mile west of WA 539 (via Badger Rd). The closest state park is Birch Bay south of Blaine. 539 is the Aldergrove crossing, not the Summas one. It has a bit less traffic, and may be better for a first-timer. In Summas, the crossing is at the end of a city (town) street.

The main advantage of Sumas is that the drive to Canada 1 is shorter, assuming you are heading east to Hope. Also if you need to find a business that can package and ship your gun, Sumas may be a better bet. At the other crossing you might have to back track to Lynden.

Google Maps has high detail satellite images of both crossings.
