My husband and I purchased a new 5th wheel last summer and are planning our first “big” trip for this year in August.

Are there any camp grounds that you would recommend in the DC area? I remember camping at a campground in Manassas about 15 years ago, but I can’t seem to find any campgrounds North of Fredericksburg.

We want to spend some time in Gettysburg, PA also, should we camp in PA and do day trips to DC?

Any help/advise would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance

Lunga Park on Quantico MCB is nice if you're active duty or retired military. Aquia Pines in Stafford, Va., about 8 miles south of Quantico, is also very nice.

Happy camping!!! See ya'll down the road!!!

Try Cherry Hill in College Park,MD. You can take a bus to the metro to get into DC. The park is nice.

Another vote for Cherry Hill. If you stay there, you will not need to drive your tow vehicle to sight see in DC which will save you a big headache. Also, during the week it is next to impossible to find parking spots at metro stations. Cherry Hill eliminates all of this because of the metro bus stop right at the campground.

Bull Run Regional Park is in Centerville, but it's really almost Manasas. Very close to route 66. They've just added 50 amp and sewer sites and the park itself has a huge pool complex with water slides. We drove through it in eatly April and they were still working on finishing the sewer lines. Should be done by now. While I haven't stayed there to personally vouch for it, we do have reservations to stay there over the 4th of July.

Gettysburg is a bit far from DC, and the traffic would just make it worse. I'd plan on camping in the Gettysburg area to see Gettysburg, then move down to Cherry Hill to visit DC.

Cherry Hill in College Park, MD for DC.

Drummerboy in Gettysburg.

It about 90 miles to downtown DC from Gettysburg. You can cut it somewhat by picking up the red line of Metro (the DC subway) in Rockville (Shady Grove Metro station). It about 65 miles from Gettysburg. But at least you won't have to hunt for a parking space in DC and deal with downtown traffic.
