My husband and I purchased a new 5th wheel last summer and are planning our first “big” trip for this year in August.

We live in Vermont and want to go to Gettysburg, PA. Good Sam’s trip planning has us go down 87 to South of Albany, NY and in PA has us go to Bethlehem, Allentown, Reading, Harrisburg and then to Gettysburg.

Is this the best way to get there? I traveled this route about 15 years ago and I seem to remember (my memory could be way off though) that there were some steep grades on this route.

Would it be a better towing route to go down 87 to 95 and then go west in Maryland?

Any help/advise would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance

I can only speak for the route from Bethlehem on south. You are on 87 into NJ and then onto 287 south to 78 West. You should be good all the way down with only some hills near Bethlehem and Allentown. Traffic gets busy around Harrisburg-Rt581 W. Look for RT15 to CampHill/Gettysburg and take Rt15 South. It will then be a straight shot to Gettysburg from there. All good road.

This is our route to see family in NJ.

Have a great trip and enjoy Gettysburg !

Having lived in New England, New jersey, Maryland, etc. and having traveled there I would go 90 to 84 to 81 to 15.

It actually depends where in Vermont you are traveling from. If your in Eastern Vermont, I would take 91 S. to 84 W, to 81 S and pick up 15 S in Camp Hill, Pa.
From Western Vermont, 87 S. to 84 W to 81 S and then 15 S in Camp Hill.
I travel from Northern Virginia to either Burlington or Springfield, VT and use the 87 S as referenced above. The biggest mountain would be near Port Jervis, NY. But not really a problem as it is all Inter-state.

That's the best route....
You can stop at the First Flying J in PA and fillup...then Fill up at exit 77...HESS FUELS (Hershey, PA exit off (I 81)...for the best fuel stops.
Get off at US 15 and head straight to Gettysburg.....it's a great place to visit.
