Have heard the propane injection increases the efficiency of diesel burn up into the high 90% range. Might check old Peterson's 4wheel offroad magazines. IIRC about a year ago, they put an injection syst. on a Ford diesel, and increased highway mileage up to about 24mpg.

Propane injection is a GREAT quick, cheap way to add ponies to a diesel. Chips are great but what if noone makes a chip for your applicatiion? I know a fellow who swears by propane in his TV. The TV is a Isuzu med duty truck i think the its an NPR or maybe an FPR something like that. Anyhow, he says it gives him about 80HP.
In Regards to your ? about natural gas in a diesel, well in a sense yes. UPS is using CNG powered Mack conventional Tractors pulling double and triples in nevada, arizonz and some out of Los Angles. and posibly in other states as well. What I have been told by the drivers who drive them is they lack in power and mileage. Ok on the flat ground, not so good in mountains but burns clean. Also many of UPS's delivery trucks are powered by CNG so yes it posible but you will lose performance but will help the enviroment, as to a conversion kit for the Duramax, not sure of that.
Back when I was a kid growing up on the farm in Nebraska, there were quite a few of the custom combiners that ran the propane conversions on their pickups. Never understood why, but there were a lot of them that did it. Must have been some good reason since they did a lot of travelling during the harvest times. If I remember right they could be switched between the diesel and the propane.
I remember seeing propane powered pick ups but they generally were dual fuel meaning they could run on gas or propane. Propane of course was cheaper so that was the reason they ran it but there was about a 15% loss of power and mileage so this raised the question of cost effectivness.
As for the propane injection for diesels, I have read that it is most useful for climbing grades while towing but you need to watch your EGTs.

There is a Diesel/CNG kit for the Duramax. In this system the diesel is primarily used to ingnite the Natural Gas which is injected in the intake. The kit has achieved as high as 50 mpg from a gallon of diesel. The savings from injecting CNG is not in improved mileage so much as it is in the cost difference between the two fuels.
In Utah where CNG is more widely available and only costs .63 a gallon, running 70% CNG to 30% diesel can save a lot of money over time. Like propane injection it also gives a power boost. It burns cleaner too. For more info look at DeLuca Fuel Products
