I imagine that we all have taken a big depreciation hit on our rigs even if we don't realize it yet.....I will not sell or buy for quite a while (thought I would trade up after 5 years), but we will continue to spend our budget this year same as last....just won't get me as far as it used to.

I would not even consider buying a NEW motorhome - not now and not 2 years ago either. Let somebody else take the depreciation hit on the front end. Some people that bought new 1 or 2 years ago or so have seen their net worth drop by probably a ballpark of $100,000. Not for me.

Now, if you take 4000 miles of trips in a year at 8 miles per gallon - that's 500 gallons of diesel. Two bucks more per gallon cost you $1000 which is a lot now. I don't like it, but we will probably still travel - but we are watching what we spend and cutting back in other areas. We looked at buying a coach that cost a lot more than the used DSDP we bought a couple of years ago and I am REALLY glad we didn't. Really glad. Would I look at buying new --- no - not now or even when fuel was cheaper.

We use the coach to go to Florida in the winter and will probably still go.

We just bought a new Country Coach Intrigue because we were able to get what seemed like a pretty good deal on it. Surprisingly while we were back and forth at the dealer over the course of a few days, they sold a 45' Travel Supreme, 2 more CountryCoaches, 2 Tiffins, and a couple of other large A's. Apparently people are still buying. They just got a shipment of about a dozen more new units and seem pretty busy. The obscene fuel costs should be offset for a long time by what we saved on the purchase price of the unit. Anyway, we realize its an expensive hobby but at the end of the day if everyone has a good time thats what counts. Also, it seems like most of the big camp resorts are still quite busy so it looks like there are lots of people out there ignoring the increased costs.

PS: also keep in mind that with jet fuel at at all time high, air travel is more expensive than ever as well, so there are not many travel options unaffected right now.

The short answer is no, and the long answer is no, too. We will buy a used DP sometime in the next few years, when our 'unclaimed' cash position and coach prices cross.

I still think that there are reasonable strategies for nearly everybody to cope with higher oil prices.....Just as its better to buy up in houses when prices are low overall, and sell down when prices are up. If you're an investor align your holdings with your spending......In other words make sure you are better off if oil goes up by more than energy will rise. If food is a major expense, bbbuy into things that do better when food goes up. In my case, I expect that rising fuel prices are going to push enough people out that coach prices will come down and I'll pay less for my next coach.

If you are basing this on justifying your purchase - You could probably only justify it if you are going to be fulltiming and living in the Class A Motorhome!

It really depends on how you look at it. We were able to justify it by the fact that we saved over 60K from what our unit was selling for last year. We wouldn't have bought it then because it was a little out of our price range. This savings pays for about 15000 gallons of fuel. That will take us over 100,000 miles.

What is your option? Not travel?

Drive a conversion van or small car? Stay in hotels? Buy all your meals.

The costs add up quick.

You have a less flexible travel schedule and it probably still costs more than operating the class A.

I will buck the trend and say that I am considering a new 2008 Newmar. We sold our 2003 DSDP about 2 months ago. So now looking for our next Newmar coach which could be a used 2006 coach if decide against a new purchase.
