Hola,
Wondering how current the info in the Churches Mexico guide is as far as RV parks. We are looking at going down mainland (west coast) Dec.1st It has been some time since I have been camping on the mainland side so I will need a refresher on where to stay. I want to order the guide but interested in how current first.
I know with all the snow birds that have been flocking down that we might need to make some reservations, which we have never had to do before.
Any suggestions on parks that might still have some vacancies between Mazatlan and P.V. that we can still reserve?

Thanks

Chuck

Maybe the most important news is to cover the situation in Mazatlan---several parks have closed including Playa Escondido, and La Posta. Last year saw near full to full conditions during high season. The Church's will be in Mexico next season to update their book.

The latest edition is about 3 years old or so, some of the information is even older, so there are a lot of changes. As indicated, the web site provides some updates, but you have to do some searching for specific park information. Mike Church indicated to me that the next edition is due sometime around 2009/10, with research being done this coming winter.

Celestino (just north of Mazatlan) has 3 RV parks (Villa Celeste, Celestino and Punta San Miguel), there will be sites available there.

Villas Onac near Teacapan, 1-1/2 hr. south of Mazatlan is another one where you can get a reservation via E-mail (you won't get a site on the ocean as these are all booked, but the ones a row back or so are OK). Rafael honours E-mail reservations and holds sites. You may want to do a Google translate into Spanish as he doesn't speak a lot of English, his E-mail address is:

villas_onac@yahoo.com.mx

Church's book talks about 10 sites or so, there are now 49 sites, 20 on the ocean, the others are one and 2 rows back.

I wonder why they don't ask for folks to provide them with updates according to some common checklist. They could then give the reviewer a credit line and picture. This would certainly expedite the collection of reviews as travelling all over this huge country is time-consuming, especially when you have to stop and gather information at all of the parks you might be able to locate.

I'd be glad to help with the east coast.

They welcome input. That's largely where the interim updates come from - unsolicited reader emails.

I expect that the reason they don't do what you suggest is that they enjoy taking an extended trip through Mexico and deducting the expense. But that's just a guess.

I think that the other reason for them doing the park reviews is the consistency, different people have widely different views as to what constitutes a good campsite staring with something as simple as length and width requirements.

I don't always concur with what their book indicates about an RV park, but there is a consistency throughout the book that works for us.

Ten people could write a review with directions and you would have ten different sets of instructions. Church must have the ability to see what the general public would be able to interpret, understand, and have the flexibility to follow. I assume it is hard to write to a "general" audience without bias.

Thanks for all the positive comments.

Yes, we'll be traveling throughout the mainland next year working on the fourth edition. It will come out during the summer of 2009.

About the updates. Most of what you've said is exaclty right. Everyone has a different background and sees campground features differently. We like to monitor the information that appears on our site. Maybe some day we will set up a bulletin board but sites like RV.net already do a good job.

Another thing about updates. Terri and I travel like crazy people from early December until late summer or early fall. That doesn't give us a lot of time to work on the website, particularly since we're also researching, writing, and selling other books too. However, during August-January and sometimes later we add a lot of updates to our site that we received during the previous season. That works pretty well since most people head south in December or January and that's when they need the info. We also make a big effort in December and January to post early information, that received from early travelers, since that early information is particularly valuable to those on their way south.

Thanks again for all your support.
