Here are a couple of photos of Ridgway SP taken last summer from the upper campground. There are a couple of different loops on the top and there are 2 different campgrounds down lower, the one shown in the photo and one about a mile north on the north side of the dam.
We had this site which was out in the open somewhat but very nice. Water spigot was about 50 feet, that 4 or 5 spaces shared. Worked fine as a dump station and fill up water was available down by the entrance station/lower campground.
Here is one of the lower campgrounds at the Dutch Charlie entrance to the park. I am standing in the upper campground "E" loop at the time.
I enjoy looking at the old pines/cedars/junipers, etc. and taking photos of them.
We also enjoyed Chatfield SP. Large pull-thrus with full hook-ups, overlooking the resevoir. They even had wi-fi, sketchy but they had it. I loved the drive up to Black Hawk and Central City. Beautiful State.

Golden Gate Canyon State park is well worth the visit and is up in the mountains. I camp a lot at Chatfield and it gets very busy in the summer as it is right on the edge of the metro area. Lake Pueblo is a great park, especially if you have a boat - I will be there for 10 days later this month. Not to forget Navajo State Park, which has a huge lake stretching right down into NM. Stayed there last year and it was wonderful.
BTW Rocky Mountain National park is not a state park!

James Robb State Park in Grand Junction is nice for a stopover. Paved, roomy FHU sites, restrooms clean, showers .25/min as mentioned above. Right on the Colorado River.....nice area to walk dogs. And ditto on Ridgeway...excellent park.
We have stayed at the KOA in Gunnison a couple of times and it was fine. It is close to the airport, but not that busy a field, plus I like airplanes. There are a couple of campgrounds west of Gunnison by the lake. Western Horizons has one where we had a membership for a few years, it is real nice but I don't know if they take in non members or not. Would be worth a call to find out though.
We spend 10 days in Ridgway and 10 days in Mueller every year. Never get tired of going there. Both areas would bring many memories for years to come and would be a highlight to your camping.
My favorites are Mueller and Golden Gate, but the most beautiful are some of the ones that are smaller and sort of "hidden", like Pearl Lake, Sylvan Lake, State Forest and Rifle Falls.

Not in Gunnison, but on the way...check out Crawford S/P on Hwy. 92...It's just a short drive thru ranch country to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison (North Rim).
Lottsa pull-thrus, one loop w/40 sites with E & W, another tent loop...most sites waterfront/view. Well-kept restrooms & grounds, stocked lake, off-the-beaten path.
And Crawford is home to "rocker", Joe Cocker. A real "cowboy" town. No supermarket tho.
