Rocky Mountain Park is beautiful, so I hear. Also around that same north/central area are Granby, Shadow Mountain, and Grand Lake, all of which I have been to. There really is something everywhere that is beautiful. I'm sure you will get plenty of responses, have fun.

We have stayed in rocky mountain national park twice. near estes park. It has to be one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. The facilities were well maintained...We are looking forward to going again. Though this time we are
not taking mother in law on 1200 mile road trip

To reply to the OP regarding Colorado State parks - looky here:

Mueller is my favorite - some beautiful sites there; it is out of Divide a bit on the way to Cripple Creek.

Mueller is nice and a fun area. Also consider Ridgway SP over on the West Slope. It is probably our favorite of all of them. We have a week reserved this summer at both Mueller and Ridgway and another week at the Forest Service campground on Lake Granby, Stillwater CG. Since a big part of the Colorado State Lottery money goes into the state park system, most are very nice, well cared for and well managed IMHO. Makes me glad I voted for the state lottery that time.

Thank you all for your information. I looked at Mueller park and it seems to be a beautiful park.

Got kids? Mueller has many trails (fairly manicured), plus playground and other nature spots.....Ridgway has swimming beach, paddle boats, other water activities....both cg's are well maintained with paved sites, good firepits, good restroom facilities w/shower houses (pay 0.25 per minute, 4 minute minimum)....ANYWHERE in Colorado is beautiful..... IMHO, of course

Ditto for Ridgway. It has been rated in the top 10 in the US. There is a lot of room between sites. It is just a few miles from Ouray where there is a pool fed by hot springs. Kids love it.

At Ridgway, I suggest the campsites on top the mesa if you don't mind sites with electric-only hookups (water heads dispersed throughout the loops). Those sites are in the trees (pinyon mostly as I remember), away from the highway, and overlook the lake with mountains in the background.

There are also full hookup sites on the lake, but they are in the open and near the highway.

Chatfield State Park, SW of Denver is beautiful and has a loop of full hookup sites. We had a site overlooking the reservoir in the disatnce with mountains beyond.

While we didn't use the public facilities, I did take a peek and they were clean, though we were there in the middle of the week and the place was pretty empty. Showers are coin operated.
