Why do some ov you think that a P/U or van W/a hiugher center of gravity would handle better in emergency manuvering?

I have a lower center of gravity, better handling suspension & better stopping power?

I got news for you neophites, the tow vehicle can not stop the trailer under hard braking, it takes trailer brakes & a properly adjusted brake control to do that.

I had tested this rig in the rain under near panic stop conditions before I subjected my family to any danger. The trailers brakes, properly adjusted coupled W/the excellent handling & stopping power of the car will bring the rig to a stand still W/no drama, just a fast straight stop.

I think I might know a thing or 2 about pulling (and stopping) trailers as back in the late "70"s early "80"s I logged about 1/2 million miles pulling 43' double deck stock trailers loaded W/cattle.

The 3 Peterbilt tractors I operated pulling those "bullracks" all had 400 HP "H" block Cummins engines & would top 75 MPH on flat level ground.

I also pulled a few loads of swinging meat too so I doubt that more than a very few of you have the experience W/trailering tricky loads that I do.

I have probably logged more miles W/a trailer in tow than most of you.

As far as trailer weight compaired to tow vehicle weight?

If a 20,000# semi tractor can safely pull a 60,000# loaded trailer, why can't a 4200# sedan do likewise W/a 3800# trailer when it is rated to do so?

Can anyone explain that?

I don't question ya, bet it would get some looks. I've always dreamed of getting a 5.9L Cummins in my Dakota and setting it up to tow 5th wheels.

On the weenies and Touaregs, I'd give my left nut to have a TDi Touareg. I might be thinking wrong but 585 ft/lbs.

A newbie, any tips please share!

I blew by a Chevy 2500 & Suburban pulling 30'ers on the long grades outside of Rochester, NY on I-90.

If I get above 65 MPH it will pull 4th on the level pretty good & get to 75 MPH @ 2200 RPM & it will pull a grade pretty well.

I try to cruise @ 60 but it's hard tp do it when the vehicle wants to do more. I haven't towwed since the 3.06 gear swap,(4.32 FDR in 3rd gear compared to 3.98 FDR W/the 2.82 axle ratio) but it should help a bunch.

Anyway, I saw the rigs up ahead so I let her build up some speed in 4th gear in the dip & blew by then doing about 70 MPH in 3rd about 2/3 of the way up the grade.

I'll bet they did a doulble take when that GoMango Charger blew by pulling that 21' trailer W/the 5.7 Hemi purring happily through those long tube headers..

These Hemi powered LX vehicles (Magnum, Charger & 300C) are potent towwers when equipped W/the Nivomat load leveling shocks & the proper load distributing hitch. They are limited to < 4000# trailers though.

I get some strange looks, but you can't argue W/results.

Just thought I would post some pix of one of my tow rigs.

This 2006 Dodge Charger Daytona runs 12.1's in the 1/4 mile @ 112 MPH.

Although it is limited to 350# of tongue weight it is rated to pull 3800# W/the light duty load distributing hitch & W/it's stock 3.98:1 FDR in 3rd gear (4.32:1 now) it can out pull just about any 1/2 ton P/U that has stock gearing.

The Nivomat self leveling shocks enabled me to pull this rig W/3 strapping late teenage boys in the back seat as well as my wife & I in the front.

When I initially set up the hitch, after driving a few miles, I had to reposition the hitch as the trailer tongue was too high after the Nivomats pumped themselves up to level out the car.

Nice setup.

You can't put 5 people & their luggage in that.
Not to mention that you probably can't buy a hitch for it.
