Its about 25 miles from Gatlinburg into the interior of Great Smokey Mt NP but you can really experience the Park and its natural beauty instead of just being stuck in the tourist trap town area(my biased opinion). Or, closer to Gatlinburg(if you really must waste time there)is also Elkmont Campground inside the Park.
Over 10,000,000 visitors per year 'waste time' in Gatlinburg. Guess they're all crazy. But I love every one of them when my property tax bill comes in each year!
Every chance I get, I "waste time" in Gatlinburg. It one of the best waste-of-time places I know.

Ah yes. I agree. Everybody MUST go to Cades Cove. Go to Cades Cove, please.
Thank you all for your replies. I was in Alcoa in April of 2007 and made my way one day down to Townsend, Cades Cove, and then made the mistake of driving into Gatlinburg. I have been thru the town, and there is so much to see.
I will be there with my wife and 4 year old daughter.
We have made reservations at Timber Creek. Very nice people on the phone, and they give 10% discount to Active Military, so I was sold! Leaving next weekend.
We originally were going to Montana then Yellowstone, then Colorado, but gas finally did us in. So we are cutting 60% of our cost going out to a place nearly as beautiful!
I have either stayed or driven through all the campgrounds in Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg and Twin Creek RV Resort is best. I have stayed there about 8 times and really like it and it has a real mountain atmosphere. I will tell you the management runs a tight ship and don't allow a lot of things that bother fellow RVers. That is what I like. The sites are paved with concrete patios with benches and picnic tables. I don't care for the new section, so keep that in mind.
