6 year old tire
I just wanted to pass on this report that I saw today on the dangers of tires 6 years old and older.
It appears that some manufacturers are saying that tires are not safe after they are 6 years old. The report is not on RV's, just tires in general.

Wow, more than 100 hundred deaths? Another example of the media scaring people for no reason. More people die from drowing in their bathtubs every year. I guess they will have to start posting warning signs on bathtubs too. Give me a break (not the poster, the media).

I had heard this a few years back when I first came on the forum and went and looked at the tires on my old Winny. The tread was great and the sidewalls looked pretty good, with just a few small cracks. THEN, and then I got down and looked at the back side of those 6 year old tires and let me tell you - the cracks were massive and very numerous. I drove it just once like that - to the tire store for a new set!!!

Strange how many 'opinions' are put forth when it comes to how frequently RV tires should be replaced.
Just today, I received the Freightliners Chassis Owners Club newsletter, and there is a "Tech Note" regarding service life for RV/Motorhome tires.
Per this article, RV tires should be inspected annually by a qualified tire specialist, once they reach 5 years from date of manufacture, and replaced before they reach 10 years from the date of manufacture.

Not all tires are made equally. Some tires do not have the problems of side wall cracks and dry rot like others do. If you do a little research you'll find that some of the U.S. manufacturers use different material. A few U.S. tires are know to go at least 8 years and still be safe.

A hundred deaths. Wow. (Said in the deadpan, monotone voice of Ben Stiller)
It would help if they qualify that number a bit. 100 deaths since… 1953? 1993? 1999? 2003? 2006? This year? WHEN?!?
And how much over that six years were the death-dealing tires aged? A week? Month? Year? 5 years?
Just another panic causing media report.
Just like the Firestone (Or was it Bridgestone?) tire scare a while back. The defective tires lost their treads. They did NOT blow out, they lost the tread and stayed rolling on the carcass. (i.e. they left a ‘’tire alligator’’ laying on the road)
Car and Driver magazine did a test in a Jeep Cherokee where they could instantly deflate a steering tire on demand with a remote control. In that magazine issue, (During the defective tire media frenzy) there’s a classic photo taken from behind the helmeted test driver, who has gloved hands held up in the air as the Jeep tracks straight after the front tire went flat; the steering wheel remaining untouched.
People were dying because they totally panicked from the sudden noise of the tread coming off and hitting the fender well on its way out. There was never any real reason to wreck the vehicle while still rolling along on the still inflated bald tire carcass!! There were lawsuits galore nevertheless. The news media blew it completely out of proportion.
Yes, tires should be replaced by 7 years. That’s what most tire manufactures say… 7 years regardless of tread wear. Heavy vehicles should follow that rule.

I also believe that tires will last much longer if driven more often (say 2 or 3 times a month) as opposed to not hardly ever (say 2 or 3 times a year) Driving will redistribute the oils and flex the walls, and eliminate flat spots. In the bus and trucking business, it is NORMAL to recap casings 2, 3, or more times over a period of 5, 7 or who knows how many years. Yes, the tread will sometimes come off, but you rarely see a sidewall failure due to cracking. Everyone has to conform to their own comfort level, but I know that I can inspect my tires and see when they are starting to fail. It MIGHT be 6 years, but it might also be 8 or 10 years.

Also depends on how far south you live IMHO. I think Florida tires will die long before those in Maine.
