I have a 24 ft Rainier (Poulsbo) travel trailer (4,200lbs) that we usually pull with my 3/4 ton diesel suburban. Unfortunately the engine in the suburban has committed suicide and won't be rebuilt in time for our first trip over Memorial weekend.
So, I have a 1992 GMC Jimmy (2 door, 4.3 4wd) that weighs 4,300lbs.
Can I pull the trailer with this?
I come from England and there is a rule of thumb that the trailer must not exceed 85% of the vehicle weight. I do not know if there is a similar formula for here.
I have the weight distributing hitch and sway bar that I will use.
Can I do it or will the trailer be controlling the Jimmy?
Thanks for your help

I don't see a problem. I tow a 23ft (3200lb DW) trail sport with a Jeep Cherokee. Loaded, it is probably over 4000. I don't feel as though the trailer is in control, we have the complete hitch set up with the sway attachment just like you explained. The Cherokee's manual lists 5000 lbs max. The inline six has a lot of torque, but your 4.3 liter is probably just as powerful, if not more. I would check the gear ratio on your Jimmy also.

It won't be as stable as your Burb with the much shorter wheel base and obviously you'll miss the power but the trailer is pretty light and not overly long. I'd THINK you could tow it but it sure won't be as enjoyable as your used to. Good luck / Skip

I routinely tow 140 % of my SUV weight. But this is Mercedes. From what I remember Jimmy is having much shorter rear overhang, than Suburban, what makes it better TV for the size.
When I towed 4000 lb travel trailer with my 6-cylinder Mercedes -friend following me to Sierra in Honda sedan had hard time to keep up.

I towed with a 23' Nomad with a Chevy Astro van for a while, same engine. It did ok, won't set any seep records though. The only consern that I would have is the wheelbase of the 2 door S10 blazer is quite short. Tail waging the dog, so tighten up the sway just a hard as you can. I know I'd do it but I'm a crazy Yankee!

A 2-Door Jimmy of the that year has only a 100" wheelbase. That is awfully small for that size trailer.
I pulled a PUP with our newer 1997 4-Door Blazer and hated it. Our Explorer by comparison was a much better tow vehicle and pulled our old PUP so much better.
I guess you could hook it up to find out, but I'm thinking you will find this not a very pleasant towing experience.

You should be fine think of your rule of thumb when you see folks with a diesel dually & a 35' 5'er that has a dry weight of 15,000# or even a semi where the tractor is 17-20k pulling a trailer that may go over 85,000#.

It will be different than with the Suburban, but it is doable with the Jimmy.

how far do you have to go. I pulled a 28 foot TT with a 2000 blazer and I am glad it was a 1/2 hour drive with no highway. But I think a 24 footer with sway tight You should be ok. Make sure tire pressure is up to max on TV and TT. Power was ok just a short WB was the problem. Drive safe.
