The DW and I are proud owners of a newer Class C, but we were talking about upsizing to a DP (I know not the current trend). We mainly do shorter trips (~100 miles) around the Pacific Northwest, but also typically do 1 medium trip (500 - 1000 miles) once a year.

We are worried about the price of fuel like everyone else, but we are also wondering that if the current situation presents an "opportune" time to buy? My own thoughts are that, due to the slumping economy, astronomical diesel prices, credit crunch, etc..., one could negotiate a serious discount off MSRP for a new DP -- 30% or more.

Has anyone recently purchased a new DP, and would you be willing to share anything general about your "deal". I certainly am not looking for details on price unless you want, but rather the percentage off MSRP that folks are getting now. Also, what are the going rates for financing -- we are thinking one could get a 20 year for 5.99%.

Just wondering.... are we crazy?

See you all out there -- hopefully.

By the way, IMHO something's gotta break soon. I personally think the China bubble of year-over-year GDP growth of >10% is going to burst like a big chew of bazooka. The world economy (and the US) can't continue to absorb higher and higher energy prices with no end in site. The high prices will eventually have a dampening effect and drive lower economies out of the market. This, in turn, will decrease demand and drive the cycle down. I guess all those greedy (insert own word here) who have bet the futures market for fuel up and up and up will loose an RVload of money... and I will certainly be smiling. Why aren't we regulating refinery capacity, why are refineries operating at 80% or lower when they have typically ran at 90 - 95% in the past? What about a 350HP diesel engine that can get 30+ MPG?I could go on and on and on .. just like all of you!

Hi. Just picked up an '08 Fleetwood Providece 40X, 2 weeks ago. Freightliner w/ 360 HP Cummings. Everyone is afaid of diesel prices, and are looking for gas rigs, so we got a pretty good deal on our '07 Southwind, on a 24 Workhorse w/ an 8.1 vortec. Also, (because of our credit rating) got 5.49% financing. We're happy, the dealer was happy, the A-Rabs are happy !! Good luck

Well I did, pretty much on a whim. I've had a Class C for years, always dreamed of having a DP in the future, didn't think the future was now. My wife was always against it, thought it would be too much to handle, $ wise and drivablity. Went to a dealer for parts last January and she walked into a 40' See-ya. March 27th we went to a RV show, April 1st I was buying a 2008 HR Endeavor. We love it, and the mileage is as good or better then my 28' C Class with the 460 engine. Got a good price & a good interest rate. Still have my C class for now. When fuel prices are brought up, I just say "well, how much does it cost to take your house to the beach, or the desert and back?" You only live once, and RVing is what I enjoy. Hopefully I'll be a full timer some day.

IMHO a used will be the best buy. Last year this time, I was able to trade with an individual below wholesale. (ie. wholesale for my old one and a little below wholesale for the new one) Result, basis for the 2003 Islander was 45% of MSRP new. Big issue was unloading my '99 Intruder gasser. Anyway, couldn't be happier; even with diesel where it is.

DH and I have a 2008 Newmar King Aire 4562 on order. PDI is scheduled for late June/early July at the factory. There's not a used coach out there that has been customized to meet our needs so we ordered new. Plus, I've yet to see a used King Aire for sale, since 2008 is the first year for the King Aire.

Newmar has been great to work in creating a custom coach for us for full-timing. Customizations include, in place of the large couch, an entertainment cabinet, which will house a 52" HDTV on a lift and will also provide additional storage for electronics, books and kitchen items. In place of the dinette is a dual desk unit. Other customizations include installing extra support in the walls behind the desk unit for our 24" iMacs, which will be on articulating arms attached to the wall. The pantry cabinet, which will store food and kitchem items, has also been customized to our design. Additional customizations include adding conduit throughout the coach so additional wiring can be added at a later date if needed and adding additional electrical outlets and halogen lights.

The price of diesel will not stop us from full-timing/traveling, but we will plan our routes more carefully.

Bought a 07 Foretravel 36ft. 4 slide with a 425 Cummins with 5000miles that the guy bought and was afraid to drive and couldn't afford. Friend told me about the coach when I was looking at new Foretravel's. Sold my 2 year old gas class A to my nephew when he returned from 2 tours in Iraq. Wanted a 42ft. but got a great deal, about 14% off the price of a new one. Looked at a few dealers in So Cal and they were very aggressive
and said their sales are way down, economy/fuel prices etc. My problem is I grew up poor on a farm in Texas and I only want to buy new but really the smartest deal is to let somebody else take the hit and buy a good used coach, especially now with this economy there are lots of people that can't afford the fuel and are trying to unload a good used 1 or 2 year old coach. Had a 24ft class C that got 9 or 10 mpg then got a 30ft class A that got between 7 and 12 mpg and now my DP gets about 8 or 10 give or take and diesel is $4.30 or more as of 5-14-08. For me mpg in different coaches is not the factor, the big difference is that diesel is 60cents a gallon more. Diesel used to be cheaper than gas but not anymore.

I may be totally wrong, but I have to ask. Why do you think manufacturers and dealers will sell motor homes for considerably less now? The costs associated with building and transporting (fuel) new motor homes has got to be more now than it was a year ago. I would like to know if any one has actually purchased a new diesel motor home at 30% off a REALISTIC MSRP with no trade in involved.

We have not yet made a decision but the offer we have for a 2008 Holiday Rambler 38 PDQ is 26.5% off MSRP. "Dealer's Web Price" was about 8% below MSRP. The price I have been offered is 20% below "Dealer Web Price".

Have been offered a brand new Alfa Gold loaded to the eyeballs for dealer cost + transportation (including a 5-year warranty). Do I want to buy an orphan??????

I think the question should be "Do I want to buy a hunk of junk?"

Ah Man! That is cold blooded. I know lots of Alfa owners that love their coaches. Mayby you had a bad experience with one, but I am sure that there are twenty more out there that have had just the opposite experience you have had. You are a rough one Bronco.

Manufacturers will not sell for much less - as sales fall they will simply not make as many. Dealers will sell motorhomes on their lot for less because the alternative is keep the units around longer and longer as they get older and less valuable. Dealers will not order as many new motorhomes, and will not let you order new motorhomes to your specs for much less than before. Everybody will do what's in their own self interest.

Very true. In fact, I am finding, that a dealer may not be able to get a new unit to replace the unit he has on his lot for a month or two. So, he is demanding a good price for the unit he has on the lot.

I ma fighting to get 25% off on a 2008 Tiffin FRED. They are not moving much past 20%.

Time to Go... check with Sherman RV..They are 40 miles from the Tiffin Plant. I just got a quote from them on an Allegro Bay FRED TGB with an MSRP of 179,000 for $137,000 and change... This was just an email, not serious negotiating yet...just under 24%. I have been told that if you order a unit, not on the lot, you can easily get the 27%
