Then the original question should have been asked in a more civil manner, such as "With the advent of cell phones and decreasing payphones in the US, what are the availabilities of ..." and I would not have reacted the way I did. But when the questions is asked the way it was, will get this kind of reaction from most Canadains, or any other person from the country the question is being asked.

And please dont delete this relpy, as it will help others in the future when composing and posting questions. It is all in how you ask, not what you ask.

Are you kidding me?! I had to go back and reread the OP. Thought maybe I'd missed something. Nope. "Lighten up Francis..."

Gee I reread the question and didn't see anything about health care but you need to check with your health insurance to see if it pays in Canada, most do some do not, also get your Canada automobile insurance cards from your insurance company.

The question seems quite reasonable to me too.

I believe Skype will enable you to phone regular phones, so long as you subscribe to their service.

If I am being asked to "lighten up", I don't have to. I responded to two other complaints about this thread. I could have just deleted the things rather than ask that you all use a different tone in your answers. There is nothing wrong with the OP question. Maybe some just have a "thin skin"! Get back on topic!

Verizon works in Canada with or without the North America's Choice Plan.
If you do not have the NACP you will be charged astronomical roaming charges.
The coverage in many parts of the west is spotty, because of the terrain. More mountains = less coverage. Before signing up for the NACP I would reccomend that you look at the coverage maps on the Verizon website. We have the NACP but then again we travel to Canada a lot and we are always in the area of great coverage.
The one thing that does NOT work in Canada on the Verizon Network is your ability to access your voice mail through the quick dial method. In order to access your voice mail you will need to dial your own number and follow instructions.

I hope that this helps.

PS If I was to answer the question in the title .....

To make a phone call in BC and Yukon, you pick up the phone, dial, and wait for someone to answer. ( A feeble attempt at humor/humour)

Have a safe and enjoyable trip.
Brenda

We live near the border and have family in Hamilton and Toronto. We have had the Verizon North American Plan for years. It lets us call Canada from the states and call with in Canada the same as if we are in the US.

Coverage in sparsely populated mountainous areas will be spotty on either side of the border. You need to be within 25 miles of a tower and not blocked by a mountain to have service. Trying to use the phone for internet connection can be tricky. Some places it works and others it doesn't, WiFi is wonderful and in out back Texas we go to the public library for our internet, I expect to do the same in Canada.

Sorry Frank... My "lighten up" comment was quoted from a movie, and directed at PavementPilot.

To the OP, go to verizonwireless web site and click on plans. You will see the plan that includes Canada. Look at the map for coverage, you will see lots of "no coverage" along the way to Alaska, but some cell service in places. You will have to decide whether it is worth it to temporarily switch plans. As I replied earlier, I did go to a verizon store, and the rep was very knowledgeable and provided me with a pamphlet and additional info that she jotted down. Safe travels, Kathy

I just read your posts, I'm Canadian and frankly, your posts embarrass me.
I hope our U.S. neighbours don't think all Canadians have your attitude.

Oh, by the way, most of us are Canadian, not Canadains.
