To those earlier AMEX grumblers - I love both of mine! I have cards from about 4 other major banks and none of them offer the same features as AMEX - especially online banking. With AMEX you can search through past transactions, filter by type or keyword, etc. Noone else does that. Not to mention the extra warranty protection they give to purchases.

Thanks 2oldgypsies for the heads up.

We will be taking a out of state trip this coming June and I will call the CC companies prior to leaving. You have probably saved us an embarrasing moment.

I've had MasterCard and American Express do this to me.
I phone now before traveling, but it has always been immediate: with no 10 days waiting period?

I still recall how pissed I was first time, out of gas in the middle of no-where and little money in the wallet and the MasterCard bounces and no phone at the gas station and they did't know what a debit card was there. When I finally get to a phone up the road MC tell me about how happy I should be about how they helped my "security". I felt real secure over half the continent from home and the credit card is bouncing: yah!! The other amusing part was they said they only cancelled my card after I had not returned thier call within 24 hours. They had left me a voice mail *in Canada*, asking was I currently vacationing in California ?!? I asked if they had my cell phone number and why didn't they use it. They said yes we have your number but for trying to verify important things it could not be used since it was a 'company phone' Let's see I was calling from who knows who'se phone in a restaurant in the place where if it was stollen someone would be calling from ..... oh and this is how much more secure than a cell phone number I had given them years earlier?

They told me I was more secure and I do not questions authority but I got an Amexcard when I got home and use the MC as little as possible since. Yes MC did re-enable the card immediately based on the phone call.

Two years ago in Florida. DD's credit card was shut off. She called the card company. It seemed that there were two charges on the same day within an hour. One in New Hampshire, and one in Florida. They expected that the Florida charge was the problem. But it turned out that someone in New Hampshire had stolen her card number and had charged over $3000 worth of goods. They caught the culprit, and DD got her money back. But it took a few months to get it.

I had a MasterCard do that to me while traveling. It was a pain but not as big of a pain as straightening up and ID theft situation. (been there done that as well) I had someone who shall remain nameless rent a house, get multiple cell phones, traffic citations even a fender bender. I had to clear my name from. Talk about a PIA.

I look at this as a good thing. AMEX is looking out for us. With all the cc fraud now I can use a little help with an extra eye.

Calling our cards now, as we're leaving on a 30 day trip in a few days. Never crossed my mind to call them. Thanks for saving me from an embarrasing situation!

We've had similar experiences with VISA, know better now. VISA tracks our spending patterns and any time there is a large departure from these patterns they put a hold on the card. This occurred recently when we went to Hawaii. I should know better by now as each time I call to see what's up, they explain why and I say, that's a good idea. I'm happy they do this and, also, that VISA is responsible for any charges that are not legitimate.

Yes, I have had Discover, MC and Visa do this to me. Before I went to Panama, I called them to let them know that I was going. I did not want them blocking my cards down there, where it would be hard to contact them. And I did not want to carry a lot of cash.
On a trip to Belize, someone stole our card # and was charging internet sex sites to it. The DW was giving me mincing side glances before we figured out what was going on.

As far as debit cards, I had a friend lose his wallet with debit cards in it. His $10,000 account was wiped out.
