Yes, but I think it is up to the bank. We use our debit cards for most purchases including gas when traveling. Back in 2005 was the first time it happened, we were somewhere in the mountains at a little convenience store getting gas and my debit card was declined.
We called our Credit Union and they said it appeared to them that it may be fraud but we got it cleared up. Since then, they have not declined our card but instead we get a phone call from an automated system asking us to call an 800 number. When we call, another automated system explains that for continued use of the card we must verify the last 5 transactions. So you put in your card number, verify your secret stuff, then the system reads a transaction, then you push a button to verify - it walks you through each of the 5.
I was impressed back in 2005 and still am that my credit union does this and we're at a point now that my wife and I make bets to see when we'll get the call. I never thought about calling them in advance until now.

I must have Discover trained - I travel for business, often by car and have yet to be delayed or denied. The only exception was when I bought a piece of jewelry as a Christmas gift - they called within 15 minutes of running the transaction. Yep, got 'em trained.

I agree that the companies are protecting themselves and me, I'm all for it! I do see the inconvenience and possible embarassment of having a card declined. I try to protect myself in addition to what the credit card companies do with credit monitoring -- pretty advanced at this point. I check my status at least weekly, and still get some alerts from them in the meantime....Anyone else using that?

We finally got AMEX trained too. Now when we make one of our long weekend trips they don't call anymore. That only happens when we got for a week or more. And, it only happens when we're towing. Probably because of the increased gas use.
When we had a Shell credit card they used to check if it was used more than one time in a single day.
Instead of notifying them ahead of time we just forward our home phone to our mobile. Works well.
