There are some really bad ones and some that may be barely acceptable. The first class hospitals are all privately owned. The IMSS do not have up to date equipment and a shortage of decent medicines. The ISSTM ( not sure if I have that right) hospitals are step above the others.

Excuse me, but I think that you should do a little research before posting, because if you've never heard of a first class IMSS hospital, that does not mean they do not exist.
I agree that the low level medical care units of the IMSS are not as good as they should be, but on the high end medical care, the IMSS hospitals are as good if not better in some cases, that the private hospitals.
Besides IMSS's nice hospitals in Mexico's mayor cities, there is the top of the top on IMSS units, The Centro Medico Siglo XXI. It is located in Mexico City, and it is considered by many, the best equipped hospital in the country.

Pro's - Only cost, there are really no other pro's to having it done in another country.
Con's - I work in an ER in Vegas and just the other day I had a patient who had the procedure done in Mexico. She was fine (7 months) until the band slipped and that's when she came into my ER. I left that night after our MD attempted to contact 4 surgeons and NONE would take her case, not one single one of them. The "M" word has such a negetive connotation to it, albiet very mistakenly so, but none-the-less very unfortunate for the patient. Personally I would pay the extra $$$ to have the access to medical attention in the unfortunate (but more common than you'd think) scenario where some sort of complication arose. My 2cents...
I'm rather outraged at the thought that these Drs in Las Vegas can just say they won't treat her and leave her in the ER? That doesn't make a lot of sense and it also sounds pretty darn callous.
If you choose your medical treatment like you shop for shoes you could get yourself in a lot of trouble both in the US and in Mexico. I wouldn't have major surgery done at a free inner city hospital in the US or in a clinic in northern Idaho either. That's me but I want to go where there is a medical school, a well equipped hospital, highly trained surgeons, and I'm willing to pay as much as I can for the best care there is.
If you feel that way then you can get as good and often better medical care in Mexico than you can in the US. Especially if you simply cannot afford the top of the line stuff in the US, you will be able to afford it in Mexico. I usually say that the top hospitals in Mexico are equivalent to top hospitals in Europe, they are both a lot better than what is available in the US.
Guz: I am aware of that in some cities they do have hospitals with specialists. I aplogize for my blanket statement. However I do stand by my criticism of the low level clinics and hospitals. I have been there with Mexican friends and I immediately think I have travelled to some 3rd world country. They are dirty, obvious lack of equipment and Drs. with a horrible attitude. I wonder how many of the smaller IMSS clinics even have a Defib.?? I invite anyone who doubts this to come to Kino and I will take you to 2 of these so called hospitals in 2 different cities. You will be shocked. BUT I do know that in some cities, Chapala for instance, many Americans and Canadians use the IMSS hospitals and they are quite good. I just wish we could access the hospitals for Government employeees. They are excellent. As I stated before many of the private hospitals are as good as anywhere else in N.A.

Yeah, right!!!
MichDoc, do you know something about private Mexican health care that we don't? Please share.
Well, okay, since you ask, let me just share this with you:
I don't see where RVing through a third world country for a few months per year makes one an expert in Mexican, European and American hospitals. For a person to make a blanket statement that Mexican and European hospitals are superior to those in the U.S. is absolutely ridiculous. People from all over the world choose to come to the U.S. for the most advanced treatment, primarily because most of the new techniques and procedures are being pioneered here. People from the U.S. also go to Mexico for treatment, but it isn't because of the high quality, it's because it's cheap. In reading the posts from this forum, or the Snowbird forum, a common theme seems to be traveling to Mexico for cheap medicine, cheap dental care, cheap medical treatment. I have yet to see one post where someone chooses to go to a Mexican health care facility because it is better than that available in the U.S. I feel that some on this forum have become so defensive of Mexico and its inhabitants that they have lost their objectivity in favor of a Mexican bias. I've noticed that same bias whenever someone has posted a question or comment about crime or corruption in Mexico. A few feel the need to turn any comment that they perceive to be "anti-Mexican" into a rant against the U.S. instead of addressing the original post.
Hmmm. MichDoc makes some interesting points. Sen Kennedy certainly has some of the best Docs avail in Boston/DC but he went to Duke for even better. When I needed radiation, I availed myself of the opportunity to go to Walter Reed even though it meant 3 months in DC and all that hassle. Some folks in the area we live in won't step foot in the nearest hospital yet it isn't an anti Eastern NC bias. Our one experience in MX with a pain Dr was fantastic but trying to find the pain meds was a goat rope. Be curious to see how this plays out.

michdoc: Watch out or the protectors of Mexico will get you!! Somehow the words cheap and medical care do not go together. It is one thing to tell people you know about this great mechanic who will rebuild our engine for under $400. But surgery?? One of our friends in Kino decided to go to Guad for plastic surgery. She picked up some strange bacteria in the op room and is buried in the State of Washington. If one needs emergency care there are all kinds of hospitals who can help you. But elective surgery?? I wonder why the hospitals in Tucson and Phoenix are full of wealthy Mexicans from Sonora??
