olmanontheroad:

WOW: That is a very serious question and no matter whose answer you get they are not to be taken lightly. Health care in Mexico varies from very bad to top notch. However I can tell you that the very wealthy who need heart surgery go to the USA. I have undergone some surgery in Mexico and I know lots of others who have as well. But none was heart related. I know lots of excellent Drs. and there are some great hospitals but I would not have heart surgery in Mexico. There are other medical procedures where Mexico is not at the forefront: prostate surgery, knee and hip replacement are 2 that come to mind.

If it were me, I would talk to the surgeon beforehand as well as to the appointed anesthesiologist, and nurses. You may also wish to visit a FIRST CLASS IMSS hospital and offer to take their top surgeon to dinner and quiz them about your proposed surgeon's track record.

I know an American who lives here in Merida and has had the "banding" type of gastric surgery here. Don't know the surgeons name but could get it for you. He was very happy with the surgery, done about 3 years ago.

First class IMSS hospital is in most cases an oxymoron. Actually I have never heard of a first class IMSS hospital. There are some really bad ones and some that may be barely acceptable. The first class hospitals are all privately owned. The IMSS do not have up to date equipment and a shortage of decent medicines. The ISSTM ( not sure if I have that right) hospitals are step above the others.

I can only vouche for the IMSS hospitals here in Monterrey. We have the Clinica 34, which specializes in heart transplants and kidney transplants (32,000 to date). Also, we have a brand new maternity hospital and the old one is still considered as good as a private hospital, and then we have two more that are especialidades. We also have the Hospital Universidad which is a public no insurance hospital with the countries top premi unit and kidney dialysis units.

I have seen some crappy one too, but they are for general things where most people use the hospitals for sniffles, colds, broken arms, etc.

My friend just had a hysterectomy last month in a general IMSS hospital. No frills but she is just fine.

These are the top three private hospitals in Monterrey and you can call any of them in English or email them for cost of surgery.

I personally know 4 people that have had successful lap band surgeries in Tijuana. First class operations, no pun intended.

Here is a link to their website for those interested.Clinic
