I've searched this web site and rvparkreviews.com for info but can't seem to find many comments about campgrounds on Lake Okeechobee other than the KOA. There are lots of them listed on rvparkfinder.net. I would just like hear what people have to say about some of them.
My husband and I would like to spend a week in early Feb 2009 in the Okeechobee area, after spending January in Ft Myers. We don't need cable and f/h/u. It's our first time in that area and we would like to be on the water and perhaps rent a boat for a day or so (since we won't have our bass boat with us).
Can anyone make recommendations? Thanks for any info you may provide.
There's a county park just down the road from the KOA although I've not been to it for a few years. At the time you could camp right next to the lake. They had boat rental, boat ramps, fishing supplies. However, camping on the lake also has draw backs especially when the airboats are running late at night.
This may not be far enough North for you, but it's a great CG and on the Lake Okeechobee Waterway. Ortona South COE (near LaBelle, FL). It's close to our home so we use it as a get away CG. It's very popular with the snowbirds. You can see some pics of one of our stays here. and I took a few movie clips during our stay last February which you can watch here. Forgive the commentary and wind noise on the videos - a film maker I'm not. lol
If you decide to try it, keep a close tab on the reservations window - it operates on a rolling 6 month time frame so Feb dates are not available yet. You cannot put in motor boats here (no boat ramp) but I have seen folks take their canoes out. So it does not satisfy that need. For that, you may want to try Riverbend which is on the West side of LaBelle. I believe they do have boat launch and it is a beautiful resort.

Another possibility is The Glades Resort near Moore Haven. It is just east of Ortona a few miles on Route 80.

It is right on the Caloosahatchee River, has a marina and golf course, is right next door to a large boat yard (do not know whether they rent boats). It is much more "rustic" than Riverbend and much less expensive. We stopped in at The Glades this winter on a brief trip through the area. The campers we met were very positive about the place and the improvements that the new owner was making. Unless something drastic happens, we anticipate spending at least part of the winter of 2009-10 at The Glades. At the very least, I think it is worth a phone call or email to investigate.
