Hi All: We are planning a trip from Colorado to Washington state in June. Will we have a problem finding diesel fuel? We plan to travel through Wy, MT, ID and Washington. Cost per gallon? Thanks for the comments. Jim2007

There will be no problem getting fuel... the problem will be paying for it.

Check Gas Price Watch for prices. Not all stations shown after you zoom in have diesel.

"Diesel fuel retail prices in 2008 are projected to average $3.94 per gallon, up from $2.88 per gallon last year. This reflects global strength in diesel demand that is contributing to a widening of the margin between diesel prices and crude oil costs since last year. Retail diesel prices are projected to average $3.67 per gallon in 2009."

I don't believe this, either.

May 7, 2008:
"For the first time in four weeks, the U.S. average diesel price did not increase. Although the prices slipped from their all-time highs in all regions with the exception of the Rocky Mountains, prices everywhere remained above $4 per gallon. The U.S. average dropped by 2.8 cents to 414.9 cents per gallon, 135.7 cents higher than the price a year ago. East Coast prices dropped the most of any region, down 3.6 cents to 419.4 cents per gallon. In the Midwest, the price went down by 3.2 cents to 410.1 cents per gallon. The price in the Gulf Coast remained the lowest of any region, falling by 2.9 cents to 408.4 cents per gallon. The Rocky Mountain region tallied the only price increase, moving up by 1.5 cents to 415.6 cents per gallon, 116.1 cents higher than a year earlier. On the West Coast, the average price moved down by 0.9 cent (the smallest drop of any major region) to 430.3 cents per gallon. In California, the average price went down by just 0.8 cent to 438.2 cents per gallon."

There is a possibility of some diesel fuel shortages.
1--refiners are building up their supply of heating oil for next winter.
2--refineries, especially on the West Coast, don't produce enough for their market area and fuel must be imported. There is a worldwide tight market in distillate fuels.
3--refineries are limited in how much flexibility they have to produce different products. With gasoline consumption slowing due to the high prices, refiners may have to reduce their refining throughput, thus reducing the amount of distillate fuel (diesel fuel, heating oil, jet fuel, etc.) that they produce, even though the market is there for the distillate. Refiners can put so much gasoline into storage tanks, then they have to reduce the refinery output. The growth in the ethanol supply, when added to gasoline, also reduces the demand for gasoline from the refineries.

All men over age 50 should get an annual PSA blood test. Mine had a low reading, but the yearly jump was significant. The biopsy showed cancer just entering the aggressive stage. Dr. Hackenslash removed it.

We are full-timers and travel around the country a lot in a diesel unit. I have never seen or heard of a diesel shortage.

We just travelled from Florida to Oregon. The prices lately have been between $3.99 - $4.69 per gallon.

We have been on the road for three months traveling the western states. When we started diesel was selling for $3.49 a gallon in Minnesota. We are now in Moab, Utah and the price is $4.39. We have paid as high as $4.65 last week. We will be cutting through Colorado on our way back to Minnesota. Prices have been going up every tank we buy, but I've not found any shortages. I do find that if you get away from the Interstate that you can find prices that are anywhere from 4-10 cents cheaper, but that's not always easy to do.

When I get home I will calculate how much we spent, but I'm thinking that this trip will cost us about $750 more for diesel than if we were paying what the price was when we started. So we don't eat out as much anymore and we are buying fewer souvenirs and looking for discounts on campground.

We'll just adjust.

Right now diesel is 4.459 a gallon hereabouts. I need about 100 gallons in my 150 gallon tank. Also, the dryer in the stick house went out. Guess where our $1200 "Economic Stimulus" check is going?
